creating a dosing routine

tetraodon

Recommended Posts

My tanks been upgraded and im coming up with a dosing routine, the word is to test for a week and base it off the usage, calc, alk, mag and such. Im considering using Kalkwasser for my dosing along with some amino acids and some broadcast feeding. Is there any sort of ball park I should shoot for? My tank is going to be mixed, 30 breeder with 20 sump fuge, debating on a biopellet reactor. Any suggestions?

You got the answer already - first step is to determine what your tank is using on a daily basis. There's no reason to worry about it until you have a decent load of stuff in there. But at that point - just test everyday around the same time. You'll quickly figure out what you're using each day. Also start testing about 20min after adding in your dose and you can figure out how much the KH/CA raise with a measured out does. Then it's just simple math - how many of those doses you need to equal the amount used over the course of a day.

Kalk is a popular choice but I believe it's a bit more advanced. If you're just starting out you might want to start with two part and figure out a good routine as you learn the basics and feel comfortable enough to start using the kalk. I know the popular method is kalk in the ATO reservoir but that can cause problems since you will be losing different amounts of water throughout the year etc.

Either way - once you have a good routine going it's pretty much automatic from there. I have two part hooked up to BRS dosers and I just test once a week to make sure nothing screwy is going on. If I add a few corals I will test over the course of a few days to make sure the amounts are still good for what the tank is using.
