Pod Your Reef

It's been a while, but I want to get back in the hobby..

Hello all,

I used to be really active on the forums by the username of Nanobuds, but I have decided to ditch that old account and start new.

At the time, I was 12 and just got a Nanocube HQI, and was very excited to get it set up. The tank was alive and health for about 3 years, until I neglected it due to a busy high school life (and maybe high school laziness...) and lack of money. I decided it would be best to tear it down and give away my coral and fish to a better home.

However, now I'm in the middle of my first year of college, and will be moving to my own place next fall. I've been DYING of reef withdrawal, and want to set up a new one. I find myself spending hours lurking here, and browsing YouTube for ideas. I have an idea on what I want, and I would like some advice on how to plan the most efficient budget.

My plan is to keep it simple. A 12g Fluval Edge, with an Aquaclear 20 fuge mod. No sump, maybe a skimmer. Just keepin it simple.

I do need lighting ideas. I will probably stay the softies/LPS route, since they are a bit easier to take care of than SPS coral. But I also want a nice, blue look, so I will probably look for cool LED mods for the Fluval Edge.

Now for the livestock... I know my plans may be pushing it, but I think it will work fine if I keep the tank clean enough. Let me know if it is waaaaay to much for a 12g to handle.

-O. Clown pair

-Pearly Jawfish

-If jawfish is too much, then maybe a Yellow Watchman/Pistol pair instead

-Pom Pom crab and/or Porcelain

-Sexy Shrimp or Peppermint Shrimp

-Couple hermits/Clean up crew

-Various Zoas

-Frogspawn/Hammer/Torch coral

-Ricordea/Mushrooms

-Other softy corals (whatever I feel like getting as the tank matures)

Other stuff

-20ish pounds of sand (whatever it takes for 2 inches)

-12 lbs of a sexy liverockrock scape (isnt the general rule 1lb/gallon?)

Hardware

-Fluval Edge 12 gallon

-Aquaclear 20

-LED light mod (recommendations??)

-2 light powerheads (recommendations??)

-Makeshift PVC home for jawfish, if I go that route.

-Black spraypaint for back of tank

So... how does this plan sound? Livestock not too much? Any good tips to save the most money?

I'm open to any criticism. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks!!

Oh, and for those interested in my old Nano... This is the only FTS I could find. This was about 6 months before I tore it down.

It is completely possible, I'm terrible with equipment suggestions though since I use a cheap and bare minimum for my tanks, right now all mine are stagnant lol. For money saving go to the LFS and pick cheapest filters and powerhead, with proper adjustment around live rock you can escape with less water moving equipment. 1 lb per gallon isn't always a good rule since no 2 rocks are the same.

Dude I would look into something other than the fLuval edge 12 gallon. I had one and I ended up cutting the kid off of it about 6 months in it was really hard to find rock that fit Isnide of the opening. Let alone a light for that tank was horrible built less into the hood part itself. You have to take water out to our your hand inside of tank. And there is a super decrease in oxygen in that tank due to it being a closed glass box design. It looks really good but honestly only a handful pulled it off to the point where it looked amazing. Anyone hs any links? If you do go that route I suggest a ac 50 w/ ac70 propeller. And a 50 watt tetra heater it fits perfect inside. As for flow honestly since its a tall tank I had to grab a vortech in order to keep the sleekness and I mounted it inside of the black back compartment :) I hope that made sense. And it did look great just not ever eye catching. But good luck also any other questions feel free to ask.:)

Btw for lighting I bet that new AI prime would fit right inside of there. And also forgot to mention the way the tank is shaped when I had a pistol shrimp in there it was by far my worst ideas with about 2 inches of sand.:( it looked cloudy all the time
