vertex refractometer not staying calibrated

Ive been using the vertex refractometer. I calibrated it for the first time and all was well. Then my reading started being weird. I checked with freshwater (after cleaning it thoroughly of salt) and it was off. This has been happening continually for a few weeks. Ive calibrated 3or4 times. Am I doing something wrong? (I am noob after all). Or is this the norm?

I've always calibrated my refractometer every time I used it, which was once a week. It would need adjusted like every other use. Also, you should be calibrating to 35ppt using 35ppt calibration fluid, not calibrating to zero with fresh water.

Oh, thanks chadf. Do you know where to get calibration fluid? The manual says to use freshwater and go to zero.

Just FYI, even the refractometer BRS sells comes with a big orange piece of paper telling us to ignore the instructions and always calibrate with the 35ppt fluid. I think most refractometers are designed for low salinity applications.

Also keep in mind it takes about a minute or two to temperature correct. I know when I mix new water it's cold so I have to wait at least two minutes to get an accurate reading.
