I'm interested in trying to set up something similar to the one posted on here using a Pentium 2 heatsink for my Fluval Edge. I already have a Dim4 controller that I managed to snag pretty cheap. Given the limited real estate on my heatsink, could you recommend the optimum combination of leds to use? Would I be better off using three or four of the Cree 3ups and then supplementing with others (hyper violet, turquoise, warm white, etc.)? Would I get better coverage in the tank by using individual leds and just packing them on there? I'd like to limit the number of drivers I have to buy, so driving as many as possible using the DIM4 channels would be great, but I'm not sure of the best way to organize everything to accomplish this and still have adequate dimming and color control. Am I asking for the impossible here? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

You don't need many LEDs for an Edge. The DIM4 needs exactly three LEDs per channel (or as close to 10v at 500mA as you can). Do you have the 6g Edge or 12g? With the 6g, I made an array for a friend that had 9x LEDs (2x XT-E 3up and 1x OCW) at 700mA and at full power was way too strong, had to run them around 450mA IIRC. So with dimming, you'd be ok to use the same and three violet on the fourth channel. With the 12g edge, well, you'd still probably be ok to run the same as you would on the 12g unless you're planning on a full SPS nano :)

I have the Edge 6g.

So did you have each of the 3ups on its own channel then? I was thinking that it would be good to have the white and blue on separate channels for color adjustability reasons. Is that not true? How did you arrange them? BBW - OCW - BBW?

If I wanted them on separate channels would I have to do 3x 3up with the 3 white on one channel, the 6 blues on another channel with a driver, the OCW on another channel and ???

Sorry for the noob questions. This is my first tank (other than a 180 gallon freshwater turtle tank which is a whole other kettle of fish, so to speak), and my first experience with LEDs!

FYI - I'm not planning on SPS at this time
