My Turn Asking For Stocking Ideas

Currently in my 7 week old 29 Gallon with a 10 gallon sump/fuge I have 2 small clowns. They have been in the tank for about 2 weeks and have been doing well. They eat plenty, just wish they would be a bit more active. They spend 90% of their time near the surface around my return nozzle. I also have a pretty large CUC and a small section of GSP and a Frogspawn Coral.

I really want to eventually get a Green Mandarin, my local LFS gets them pretty tiny and has a good success rate getting them onto frozen. I plan on waiting at least 6 months before adding one though.

I'm wondering what do you guys recommend I add for my other fish. I would like one that swims in the water column and is pretty active. I'm not a huge fan of Cardinals, Chromis or Firefish though. I had originally wanted a 4-Line or 6-Line but think they might out compete the Mandarin for pods between feedings. Do you think a Cherub Dwarf Angel would be a good addition?

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

I have a six line and hes awesome, constantly swimming everywhere and I have a mandarin too which eats frozen food and they are both fine. Some people have had aggression issues with six lines but I got a really small one and have had no issues. The most active fish I have is a Midas blenny, never stops swimming, takes a rest on my wave maker then he's off again!

If you're planning on more LPS, I recommend staying away from any dwarf angels. If the mandarin is going to be on frozen and since you have a fuge, you should be fine with both the 6line and the mandarin. Just make sure that the fuge has a nice breeding spot for more pods.

Thanks for the suggestions and comments! Good to hear the two can be kept together in a nano. Would it be okay to add the Six Line before the Mandarin?

My plans for coral are mostly zoas, maybe add a hammer and some mushrooms. Would a dwarf pick at the zoas? Also do you think a final stocking lits of 2 Clowns, Six Line, Mandarin and a Clown Goby would work? Would be closer to or past the year mark for all that though.

Dwarf can pick at anything really, but they have more of a fancy towards LPS. I suggest adding the six line last, but do know that the six line can vary and end up becoming a bully. However, I don't recommend getting both the six line and the mandarin at the same time in under a year. It would be better if you got them after a year when you have more pods in the tank. Also make sure you have enough rock work and caves for everyone.

One last thought but it's really something to think about since I'm kind of tired, but make sure that you can handle the bioload of all your fish too and the aggression of your fish because if one fish is bullying another, it will continue to do so until the victim is dead.

If your after a dwarf Angel take a look at the royal blue dwarf Angel, I have one, they aren't too common but they are the smallest of the dwarf angels. Mine hasn't gone for my zoas or any corals, however this will be different per fish

Thanks for the tips and advice guys. I think I'm going to pass on the Six-Line at this point and will probably look into a Dwarf some point soon. Then maybe in another month I think I'll go for a goby/shrimp combo or a clown goby. At the year mark or a little after I will then look more into getting a Mandarin if all is going smoothly!

It's a 29 with a 10 Sump. I think I have to disagree as well, I have seen plenty of 29s with 4 and 5 fish. I will also be taking it slow and watching my parameters closely as I add livestock.

I have 130 litres (30 gallon) and I have 8 fish in there, the biggest of which been a maroon clown and dwarf Angel. I also have a cleaner shrimp, 4 hermits and 4 snails and all my parameters are fine. What I did was add a fish then check my parameters when my water change was due, if they were fine I took that as my bioload is fine and can handle it. It's still fine now and I think I could add more, the key is it keep checking the parameters and add smaller fish
