My clam died after 2 days :( Why?

My SPS have been flourishing over the past few months and I decided to add a clam I found at a LFS..

Added it sunday after an hour acclimation. I did not remove from the water, and I burped it. Yesterday it was looking really happy and was extended out..I come back today and it looks completely dead with no reflex ability.

What could have happened?? Im kinda upset about it, both for the clam and the $90 I spent on it...

Well I found it....my cleaner shrimp ate it. I saw him taking chunks off and eating it arghhh!!!

I removed from the tank before it started rotting.

poor thing.. :(

Sorry that your clam didn't make it. :(

However, your cleaner was most likely eating an already dead/dying clam. Usually cleaners will never touch a healthy clam. So I don't think the cleaner is the cause of your clam's death.

You should ask ZephNYC - he's more experienced in this area. Also, don't forget to post your parameters, lighting, any change in the usual routine etc. on here. We can't help if there aren't any specific details.

Looks like a small maxima clam. The survival rate for small clams is not great. It is possible the stress of traveling halfway across the world to your tank was too much. Sorry for your loss.

Probably a pest snail ate it at night. I know I have an entire community of predatory whelks that I can see after lights out. Pyramidal snails can also eat clams. I figure if I ever try a clam it's dead in 5 days so I don't bother.

Do a lights out search at night looking for critters you don't recognize.

Lost my Crocea after 3 days. Developed what looked like pinched mantle. Tested all my water and ammonia was .25... I got that back down to 0 and there was just no recovery. I think once these guys go South even a little bit...they're gone

Got any before pics? That would help. As others have said, your shrimp didn't kill your clam. Could be one hundred other things, but not the shrimp. Need the details to try and sleuth it out. Also would be interesting to know how long the LFS had it and how they kept it. DId you contact them and let them know? I would.

That's the thing about clams. Leave for work in the morning and it is perfect, dead as hell when you get home.
