newf99
Today I was stung by something growing on the side of a blastomussa frag. It looks like it could be a sponge or some sort of algae or ascidian. It is black, encrusting about 2-3cm thick with short black spines. My hand is now pretty numb. I'll try to post a picture; any ideas though? Link to comment
Mirya
No ideas, though vermatid snails and urchins may be two other spiny things to consider. You can try soaking your hand in as hot of water as you can tolerate. This is effective at denaturing the protein in urchin venom. You could also consider soaking your hand in vinegar as the acidity destroys the venom of many other sea creatures (jellyfish, sponges). Here is a chapter on management of stings by various marine critters that you may find useful: http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/media/us/samplechapters/9780323068130/Aquatic%20Life.pdf Link to comment

opaquelace
I've never seen a sponge quite like that, and I've never heard of a sponge stinging anyone. Is it possible you were stung by a bristle worm? Or maybe the blasto? I've been stung by a ricordea florida. I had some initial that went away and then I had perfectly round scabs where I'd been stung a few days later. Link to comment
