cycling with live rock...there are two pistol shrimps!

Just started my cycle 3 days ago (using live rock 2nd hand from an established tank) and this morning as i was checking out the rocks i noticed movement inside one of the holes.

Curious, i put a sliver of fish next to the hole to draw them out so i could id it.

lo and behold, 2 pistol shrimps promptly started cutting the fish and scurrying back inside their hole.

Now i am unsure if i should feed them during the whole cycle or just ignore them as though they didnt exist.

I am reluctant to catch them as their hole is in a live rock already fully aquascaped.

Thoughts, comments are most welcome.

If your rock is from an established tank and the transfer process was fairly quick, you should have minimal die-off and therefore minimal evidence of a cycle. That being said, I would still keep a close eye on your ammonia and nitrate levels and as they climb you will need to do frequent water changes to avoid poisoning your shrimp. Since the cycle could take a couple of weeks to get healthy levels of the bacteria growing, you will need to feed your shrimp. Assuming you plan to keep them in the tank.

An alternative would be to trap them and move them to a different location until your cycle is complete then return them to their former home.

its day 4 of my cycle and so far i have reached 1 ppm of ammonia. to be honest, i am not that interested in these shrimps. i will try to catch them but so far they are very elusive.

thanks for the feeback:)

I had a mantis and 2 pistol shrimp survive my startup cycle. With live rock though depending on how it was handled before you got it your cycle will likely be short and easy. I would put money on the pistols surviving.

If they are in the same hole, they are likely a bonded pair. You could get a bonded pair of shrimp goby to go with them, and have a full house.

What kind of PS shrimp are they? I got a trio in my tank, which is two bonded candy pistol shrimp and a YWMG.

That's exactly what I got.
