VW_TDI_02
I just started up my 20 long nano reef and for now I have two black and white percula clownfish. I just got them yesterday (less than 24 hours ago) and I attempted to feed them this morning with some NLS 1mm pellets but they just watched them sink to the bottom. I also have some frozen Hikari Mysis shrimp. I know it's best to thaw it out but the uncertainty is in regards to how much and what to do with the spare stuff. Normally people say that however much they can eat in about a minute. The issue is that there is no way that these two fish are going to eat an entire cube of mysis shrimp. I'd rather not end up tossing out 1/2-3/4 of the cube each time I use the mysis shrimp so are there any recommendations? Link to comment
SquishyFishy
Boy you don't want to know what I thought your thread title said when I first glanced at it I slice up my frozen cubes into quarters with a razor blade and put in a biggie and back in freezer. 1 of those feeds all my fish and nems. My 2 clown love my NLS Thera-A+ though, no problem. Link to comment
VW_TDI_02
I think that's what I'm going to do. They still aren't eating the pellets unfortunately. They are devouring the mysis shrimp which is great but they still haven't shown any attention to the pellets. The tank itself is doing well. 0 ammonia after two days or so of feeding mysis shrimp. Next time I go by walmart I'll make sure to pick up some razor blades so I can cut up the cubes. If only they made cubes about 1/4-1/8 the size because those would be fantastic for nano tanks. Unfortunately I still haven't gotten any corals or an anemone. From what I've read, tanks should be up and running for about 6 months before getting an anemone so I guess I have time to wait. I think next week I'll order up some corals from saltcritters since pay day is coming soon. Any other sites with cheaper corals?? Link to comment
jamescon85
I would feed them half a cube, maybe nix it up a but, sea weed, my sis, shrimp. the way I feed them is I get a cup and put a bit if the tank water in it, then drop the food in, leave it half an hour then pour it into the tank Link to comment
GokesReef
You could also just pick up some flake - slow to sink and clowns should eat it right up. Link to comment
VW_TDI_02
I have some spiralina flake food that I tossed in their yesterday. Not sure if it was the clowns or the crabs/snails that ended up eating it though. I think half a cube might still be too much for just two percula clowns. Still using the same method but just with 1/4 of a cube. I think in a few hours I'll try again with the spiralina with the powerhead off and see what happens. Link to comment
VW_TDI_02
[update] So I finally got them to eat. It took them a while but eventually they figured out that it was food I was dropping into the tank. First I tried the spiralina flakes and once I got the flake to actually sink, they began to munch on it. Eventually the larger one even swam to the top and picked one off the surface of the water. After that I tried with the pellets and as soon as the pellet got close, they grabbed it and ate it. From here on out I'll probably be feeding them once a day with the usual food being about 4-5 pellets and a few small pieces of flake food. Every now and then I'll treat them with 1/4 cube of mysis shrimp and nothing else. If that ends up being too much food then I'll feed the rest to my barbs which will eat pretty much anything. Thanks everyone for the help. I'm very happy to see these guys eating prepared food. Link to comment
