Hello, this is my first tank long ever on Nano-Reef, so let me introduce myself. My name is Matt and i have just recently started keeping a reef tank. I started off with a 10 gallon nano-reef, which i left up for about 2 months. I recently got the go ahead to upgrade to a 20 long aquarium, which imo is a much more favorable size.

Current Equipment List:

Aqueon 20l Aquarium

WP-10

20lbs of live sand

20lbs of cured live rock

Aquaclear 30 HOB Refugium

100w Heater

OceanRevive S026 120w LED

To Get:

Smart ATO *added 1-28-15

RO/DI Maker

Hydor Nano Protein Skimmer

New Camera! (maybe a bit of a stretch!)

Coral Stocking in 10 Gallon:

Watermelon Zoas

Candy Cane Coral

Duncan (x1)

Frogspawn (x3)

Assorted Mushrooms (Blue and Red)

God of War Zoas

Planned Coral Stocking in 20 Gallon:

More Zoas! (possible zoa garden/rock)

Bubble Tip Anemone

Possibly some SPS

Neon Pink Stylo

ASD Rainbow Stardust

Sweet Rainbow Quadra

Need to put more bright colors in so suggestions are welcome!

Current Fish Stocking:

1 Onyx Clown

1 Snowflake Clown

1 Psychedelic Mandarin (Trained on Mysis, Brine, and New Spectrum Pellets) RIP 3-10-2015 (jumped)

Im Looking forward to keeping an updated log, and getting my feet wet with a longer tank!

20 long is a great tank, lots more room for swimming fish, and more surface area for light loving corals.

Do you plan on derimming the 20L yourself?

I just recently derimmed my 20long using some elbow grease:

Still working on getting some of the excess silicone off the rim. any suggestions would be appreciated!

I've always wanted to de rim a 20 L but feared coming home to a disaster one day

yeah, i can understand that fear. This tank has held water outside for about 12 hours now, gonna let it sit for another 48 to make sure that nothing happens. If heard lots of success stories regarding this tank size.

Hoping to make the same upgrade in a few months. Following the progress here.

welcome to the show :D

So im hoping to make it up to my LFS today to purchase 2 turbo snails to help beef up my CUC. I also am going to start looking into getting a Mandarin. Does anyone have any advice on training/feeding a mandarin in this small of a nano tank?

I would wait on the mandarin until the tank is much more mature. They can be touchy and if there isn't a ready source of pods for them to eat they often don't do well. A really good article is posted on this in the beginner section.

I am definitely going to wait on actually getting the fish, i am just looking for possible training methods and such so i can familiarize myself with the method before i actually have to do it myself :P

Since you started with live rock.. I would wait 6-8 months. If it was dry give it a year. Get some nice display macros to help give pods some homes. Don't get anything that would compete like wrasses etc. Definitely train him/her onto frozen. I have a red scooter in my 20 long and he eats voraciously. I started him on bloodworms minced up in a jar, gradually switched him to mysis and now he LOVES Rod's food. He will actually take bites out of the bigger pieces of shrimp in Rods actually.

So far the tank looks great. I recommend the jar/shot glass method for sure, worked well for me.

Tank looks really awesome so far, great work.

Thank you so much! I have some Chaeto in my HOB fuge thats been growing like crazy and was seeded with a copepod dose from reefcleaners.com. I still plan on waiting ~7 months to add the little guy to make sure he has PLENTY of food. It would be such a shame to lose such a beautiful fish.

I do have a question regarding your setup. Do you have a sump for your tank? i noticed you have a skimmer and im toying with the idea of adding one to mine (hydor nano specifically)

I don't have a sump in fact, I rigged the nano skimmer I have inside my AC70 actually. Not the best solution but the NS-80 works really well. And it still looks decent enough. If I could have a sump... (aka if I had been smart and drilled..) I would have the biggest skimmer I could fit in a 5.5G tank.

That being said... With any dragonet or a pair of clowns I would definitely use a skimmer especially in a small tank like this to allow you to overfeed.

Also ordered a Smart ATO from eBay yesterday, so that should be here by the end of the week. Looking at purchasing a pair of snowflake clowns as i gave my baby to my sister for better care in her smaller tank. Im also going to look at getting a RBTA as my water has been pristine for the past week, and my rocks came precycled from my 10 gallon. Also going to purchase a reef test kit so i can look into dosing Kalk so i can grow some SPS so anyfeedback would be appreciated in that regard.

Added some SPS, along with some more Zoas :D The coral addiction is really starting to consume me. waiting for my next paycheck to look for some nice torch coral and a pair of snowflake clowns.

Has anyone had any experience with test kits for calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium? i want to start dosing 2 part, but need a test kit so i can determine where i am at.

Now trying to get some torch coral!

Also going to start looking for a BTA. Has anyone had any experience with them? im afraid about compatibility with my mandarin

Link to comment

BTA should not be an issue with the Mandarin.

yay! i think when i get paid friday im going to look around for one. Theyre such awesome creatures. Also hoping to get more coral this weekend :D

Has anyone any experience for changing out live rock? im really interested in getting some dry pukani rock from BRS as i like the look a lot, and getting rid of the rock currently in my tank. Im assuming this might mess up my good bacteria? Any help would be appreciated

You can do it slowly over several weeks piece by piece, or cure it in a separate tub until its ready for your display. Either way you're likely to have a mini cycle when you switch it.

Yo I found your link from RC, I just wanted to say you have a pretty nice setup there. Im really digging the rimless look.

Maybe after some of my corals grow out we can do a swap, I noticed you're looking for some of the same corals I currently have.

Link to my tank is in my signature.
