Looking for Aquascaping Tips/Ideas **

Hello Everyone
I have just set up my BioCube 29, and aquascaped with live rock.

Unfortunately, I really dislike the way it turned out, and will be starting over. Any advice on aquascaping would help.

Here is what I would like to know:

1. I will be putting soft corals in eventually, so I am wondering if there are any shelf-like pr any cave-like rocks I can purchase. If so, where and what kind?
2. Is there a specific way this should be done for the corals to live properly on the rock?
3. Does the rock have to be live or can it be dry, or some other kind?

If anyone has pictures or can share some ideas, I would appreciate it because I am lost and cannot begin to cycle until this is done!

Hi Pisces28 and welcome NR. No, an aquarium can be started with either dry rock or live rock depending on what you want as your final outcome. There are pros and cons with both. Dry dead rock can be used to prevent unwanted pests and hitchhikers from invading your tank. Make sure your dry rock is ok for marine enviroments because rocks containing metals will corrode in salt water. To start the live process you can put a small cocktail shrimp in the tank to start decaying, ammonia will be produced and then the bacterial cycle will begin. That whole process may take from 4-6 weeks average. Choosing to use live rock can tremendously speed up the process although many creatures that live in the ocean may have already claimed that rock as home and you may or may not be glad to have them in your aquarium. It helps me when I am aquascape ng to picture a landscape in nature and mimic that. Be sure not to place your rock too close to the glass or you wI'll not be able to clean the glass of algae. Good luck and have fun with it.

Welcome to NR and be sure to check the Aquascaping forum as well as Member's signatures. Many have links to their tanks and will give you some ideas. Good luck!
