Testing for nutrients

Just a quick thought... what if you turned your lights off for a day and then tested your water for nitrate and phosphate? Everyone always has algae problems and says their nutrients are zero because the algae is using them up... if we turn the lights off then there will be no photosynthesis and the nutrients should stay in the water column correct?

It's more of a biology question, if algae quits utilizing nutrients when light for photosynthesis isn't available.

My guess is that (even if uptake temporarily stops) the levels would remain low unless there is a significant import in nutrients during the blackout. The algae won't release its nutrients, unless it dies, or goes sexual.
