Dkh/Ca/Mg

Hoping someone can help me understand my results. So with all the SPS I have been adding to my tank I need to start dosing and started testing Dkh/Ca/Mg today. Found out why I have been seeing my colors decline in my SPS. I tested my Old water and New water after my water change. Hoping someone can help me understand why my Dkh is getting used up so much faster than Ca. I used all Red Sea test kits except for Phosphate I used Hanna. My old water is 2 weeks old.

OLD NEW

DKH 3 6

Ca 400 460

Mg Error 1300

Trates 8 4

Amm. 0 0

Ph 8.2 8.2

Phos. .08

KH is a smaller scale, so it looks to get used up faster.

Stop testing calcium, test KH, figure out your usage, and dose equal parts two-part. This will keep calcium in a safe range.

Acros can't stand swings in KH, it will brown them and eventually kill them. You need to maintain a very stable KH to be successful with most acropora. Good luck!

Awesome thanks Mark! I will do that! Part B of my 2 part was backordered and should be here early next week so will be starting dosing as soon as it arrives! As for them hating swings I am getting growth on all of them they are just turning a dull to nasty brownish depending on the sps. My montis dont seem to care unless they are going to blind me when I get my parameters right again! :)

That might be shipping shock, it happens. Keep things stable, make sure they maintain good polyp extension at night, and they should color back up fairly quickly.

I am sure it's a little bit of everything. Thanks again mark!

  • 3 weeks later...

Since beginning to does 2 part for about 2 weeks now my dkh has been steady at 6. Never straying...and my Ca stayed at 450 pretty much give or take a few. Then I did a water change on Sat and my DkH spiked to 8. Burned some tips...tested 2 times over 6 hours and it stayed. Then the next day I tested again and its back to 6 dkh and my Ca is spiked to 500. any ideas at all what could be causing these numbers to change during the day so much. I dose at 1AM and only 1mL of each A and B part. I just wanna get this under control so I can start getting my SPS to color back up and grow!

Its the same bag that I have been mixing. My Dkh mixes higher so I expected the rise. What I dont understand is why over night my DkH would drop 2 points. Even when I was dosing the same as prior to the water change and it was stuck at 6. Also my newly mixed saltwater mixes at a super high Dkh of 11 or 12 but Ca is at 460 or so. That doesnt explain how my Ca would rise, would it?
