Tsubatsu's IM Fusion 20G AIO Softy Tank

I've been on this site for a little while now and figured it's time to start my own thread. I've been successfully running a simple 10G, soft coral tank for about 6 months now and I wanted to commit some serious funds into running a real display tank!

The plan is to primarily stock the tank with Softies and Leather coral and eventually move onto LPS once I get better as a reefer.

I did a little bit of research with the help from a friend and decided that the IM Fusion 20G was the tank for me.

After reading a bit about the tank, I also decided to upgrade the return pump to a MaxiJet 1200 (which took a little modifying to make it fit - pics below). Right now I have the tank scaped and setup to cycle with a 75W Neo-Therm heater!

In order to make the Maxi-Jet 1200 return pump fit into the sump, I used a saw to hack off about half of the mounting bracket. Worked like a charm and just barely fit! It has a strong hold though. (Sorry about the bad pic!)

I read a horror story about the Y splitter coming loose and shooting water all over the floor, so I zip-tied all of the loose tubing and trimmed them accordingly. Ironically, the tubing that attached to the Y splitter was SUPER tight, so I didn't tie those.

**Note: in order to make the Maxi-Jet fit with the stock tubing, I had to find a random adapter I had laying around. It's not a good fit out of the box!

Here is a picture of the scape! I'm feel really good about it.

And here it is filled with water! The water is still a bit cloudy, but I'm sure that will clear up soon.

Thanks! How do I fix my pictures? This is my first thread so I don't really know what I'm doing... Haha!

Your pictures are fine as is, however, its more common to use a third party like Photobucket, Tinyurl, or Flickr to upload images. Then you take the direct link and then enter it in the field prompted when you click the "Image" button in the post editor. Usually posts the images full size, thats the only thing that's different.

Thanks for the tip! I tried that before, but it kept saying, "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community." I tried using Flickr and Photobucket URLs but it give me that message. The only I could save my post was by using the Gallery upload method.

I had that problem for a while. When using Flickr, click the "view all sizes button" on the download icon (not the pictire link yet). When you get to the next page, you select the size you want to display, then right click on the photo itself, copy address and paste in the forum.

Nice scape, I dig the tonga branches. What are you going to do for lighting?

Thanks, man. I'm not sure if I want to go with t5s for full on LED... I'm also looking at a pair of goose necks and par bulbs, too... Hmm.

Any recommendations for a $200 lighting budget?

Thanks for the recommendation!

How goes the cycling? Any updates?

Sorry for the late response! I've been working out of town, so I haven't stocked the tank yet. The cycling is going well, but slow. I want to give it plenty of time to establish itself.

I did order a t5 light and an ATO. I'll be sure to post some pics once I get them installed!

Okay! Sorry it's been so long since my last update. I have finally moved back home after being on the road for the past 3 months (I do contracted work and travel a lot).

But I'm back home and ready to start stocking this tank! It's been a long time coming.

  • 2x Scarlet Hermit Crabs
  • 5x frags of assorted Zoas
  • Kryptonite Candy Cane (or trumpet coral?)

My firefish decided to come out and say hello! He's such an awesome fish. He has already taken a liking to Hikari pellets!

I've decided to name him Calcifer. He's named after a character from Howl's Moving Castle.

The initial idea behind the tonga rock was to mount LPS and SPS onto the broken tips and let them grow out to look like trees. Trumpet coral look incredible after they have grown into a colony and I'm excited to get started with this piece. What do you guys think?

If I'm not mistaken, I believe these are Radioactive Dragon Eyes and Watermelon Zoas.

I can't get over the how incredible this fish looks. I haven't seen any firefish with such detail in it's tail before. I knew I had to have this one!

And finally, the FTS.

Found your thread- nice and clean looking- Ya get some tabling Acro to grow out over the rocks?. Off to a good start for sure!

Excellent! I like how you mounted the trumpets, those will look killer when they grow in.

Yeah, I can't wait to see how they grow out!

A few days ago I added some new livestock!

  • 1 Black Ocellaris Clownfish
  • 1 Lawnmower Blenny
  • 2 Duncan frags
  • 1 Acan frag
  • 1 Fungia plate

I also did a lot a rearranging, frag mounting, and my first (accidental) fraging of some zoas. Fun stuff!

Here's the left side of the tank. It wasn't until I uploaded this photo that I realized that my blenny is in the pic.

A few days later, I added a condylactus anemone! I later found out that clowns don't normally host this type of anemone. I've read about a few (read: rare) occasions where a clown did host, but it's certainly not normal. Still a cool addition to the tank though!

Side shot of the anemone!

My first attempt at fraging(sp?)! I accidentally knocked these heads off when I was removing them from the original plug. I think it turned out alright and the zoas are still opening up.

Here's a fungia plate and an acan frag that I'm coral-sitting for a friend. Looks pretty good!

Mounted some Duncans on the center tonga rock. I'm so stoked to see these grow out! I'm aiming for a Dr. Suess themed "tree" as the end result.

This guy was SO hard to get a good shot of. I don't think the image is very good, but it was the best one from the lot. I named him Oliver.

FTS - I'm thinking about moving the kenya tree back over to the right side once the anemone settles in for a few days. What do you guys think?

**Side note - my poor Firefish died the other day. I'm not entirely sure what happened, but I think it had something to do with the addition of two new fish. I made sure to monitor them for a few hours after adding them, and I didn't notice any aggression, but after just two days of adding the new fish Calcifer was a floater.

All of the other fish seem happy, active, and they all eat regularly. So hopefully I'll see some better success with them.

Sorry about your firefish- sucks losing a fish. On a happier note- the new additions are looking great! Clowns are tough to get good shots of for sure- always on the move. I do think moving the kenya tree to the right would look good- as you said after you know where the anenome settles in. Good job man- keep it up!
