Live Rock Previously In Tank, etc.

RIP Sebastian

I am aware that the bacteria on live rock triggers the nitrogen cycle to start. However, the store near me that sells live rock keeps it in their display tanks. Will the rock instantly cycle the tank? Will it cycle at all? Do I even have the right idea about cycling.

P.S. Can I seed my new tank using bacteria from a freshwater tank?

Thanks,

RIP Sebastian

If it is kept in water and transferred quickly, it may not cycle at all. Keep in mind, if they have any fish with parasites/disease in that tank, it may come into your tank with the rock.

No, freshwater bacteria and salt water bacteria are different.

You should always ask if the rock is cured or uncared. Cured rock has had time in a dedicated tank with which, dead, and decaying organisms can fall off, and then be placed in your main tank, with no die off affecting your water variables. Uncured rock rock has dead and decaying organisms in and on the rock. Keeping it in a separate tank to get rid of the die off is essential to not pollution your tank and spurring an unwater cycle, unless this is a brand new set up, where this action can aid in the nitrogen cycle for bacterial growth.
