JJ's Fluval Edge 12g

So after searching high and low for an aquarium that would not look like a monstrosity in the house, I have decided to modify a fluval edge as it is one of the few overall good looking small tanks out there.

Needless to say it will need a lot of modifications to make is suitable for my future marine critters.

I will post updates of my progress as I go along. I am still new at this and learning as I go along. Please feel free to give me advice.

Here is what I have planned

Led Flood lights:

10w RGB

20w Cool white

LED moonlight

10 or 20 g Sump/refugium with

Weipro SA 2011 skimmer

UV filter

Cobalt MJ2000 return pump

Jebao rw4 wavemaker

First mod: Overflow box built into the back of the fluval edge.

I got some .220 clear acrylic from home depot. First time I have ever worked with this material so it was a bit tricky.

After looking at the column of the Edge I realised there were plastic ridges sticking which would make a perfect place to rest the overflow box onto instead of trying to attach the box to the column.

I made the box big enough so that I can still fit the wires of the LEDs next to and past it.

I still have to drill the holes but I have not worked out what sizes it should be yet.

I will do a Herbie overflow with a loc-line retur, so there will be 3 holes.

I am posting many pix as I am sure there are other Fluval Edge moders looking for ideas. These LED floodlights will have to do until next xmas.

Feel free to give me any tips on this lighting mod. I happy with it so far. Still need to paint the metal bracket and add screws to Edge plastic frame to support the metal bracket.

Is the water falling from the overflow into the little overflow chamber loud, I need to sleep beside it and was wondering if it is noticed at all.

I have only done one water test so far. The water actually falls against the back wall of the overflow box which reduces the noise.

Very cool, definitely will be watching this tank. I really like the edge tanks and almost went with the 6 gallon when I first started but decided against it because I thought it would have been too challenging for my first tank. Do you have stocking ideas yet?

I keep changing my mind on stock but here is what I have in mind.

1 x Clarki clown

1 x Strawberry dottyback

1 x Pompom crab

Feather duster

Seafan

Suncoral

Zoas

We are leaving for South Africa for 2 weeks so I will only start the tank in March. The wait is killing me! Already have plans in my head for a second tank lol

Can you start the cycle before you go down to South Africa? I really want a Pom Pom crab they are so neat. I am just so limited where I live when it comes to local pick up stuff

I have to do some work on the cabinet first. Have to drill a hole in the top to feed the plumbing through.

Ahhhh, well good luck in staying patient haha, and I really like the way you are doing your rock scape with the pvc for support, that's a really good idea

I used this as my inspiration. I like the top heavy look but i know it will be tricky with the Edge's small opening.

I have been wanting to have a Fluval saltwater aquarium with refugium for awhile now but always stop myself cos of the small opening and also could not figure out the overflow. Now I am excited to follow your progress. Cos I might just get the Fluval 12 gallon for my second tank. Waiting for more post. thanks
