Hey guys,

I previously had a 10 gallon nano with about 8 pounds of live rock. Just yesterday i transfered my 2 clowns and 3 coral pieces to a new 20 gallon long. Along with the livestock I added the live rock from above, the live sand from the 10, and all the water from the ten. Pretty much the only change was the increase in tank water volume. I would like to add about 12 more pounds of live rock to have more hiding spots, places to put coral, and most importantly more filtration. I would like to know the best way, if possible, to add the live rock. Thanks! A little background info on the live rock, it would be from my LFS and is kept cured in a tank full of just live rock. (Basically its a 40 gallon tank full of cured live rock) Any help is much appreciated!

So if the LFS cures the rock elsewhere and then adds it to the tank, you should be fine, but if they add to that tank whenever they get more uncured live rock you might not be getting cycled rock at all. Plus, there's the question of hitchhikers. If I were you, I'd get the rocks, then put them in a container and test for a cycle. Watch out for hitchhikers if you like, hell even treat with prazipro if you're banking on your current tank being parasite-free. Only reef-safe meds, of course, and only if you're not in the group that thinks there's no such thing as a reef-safe medicine, because even Prazi-Pro will mess with some cool beneficial hitchhikers.

If the rock is cured, you are good.

If the rock is uncured and produces limited waste and/or your filtration system is up to par, you're good.

Otherwise, hilarity ensues.

The above 2 posts have good info. They only thing that makes me nervous is that you transferred the sand over to the new tank - often it will contain a lot of detritus and mixing it up can result in a mini-cycle. I'd suggest testing for ammonia the next few days just to be safe.
