Pulsing Sinularia

Does anybody have one of these or any experience with one? Went into the LFS yesterday and my daughter saw something she liked so we picked it up and Pulsing Sinularia is what I believe it to be from looking on the webz. I'll post some pics later when I get back home from work.

If anybody has pics of theirs, that would be cool to see as well.

Here's a pic, will try to upload a video in a bit:

Sure it isn't pulsing Xenia?

Positive. See above.

Maniu - yeah, saw that video. I'm just wondering about actual experience with keeping them. I was told they are very low maintenance, but then the guy didn't even know for sure what it was. I don't want to kill it, but it looked happy after just a couple hours in my tank.

Looks very similar to what we call finger leathers, I'm not sure if it's really pulsing on the video like the pulsing xenia does or if it's just the polyps grabbing food off the water column because that's what my finger leather does when I feed the tank.

here's a photo of my sinularia for reference; does it look anything like what you got?

Didn't do any search on care but I am sure it isn't most demanding or rare in business. Keep us posted. I'm interested

Yes, mine's a little more brown, but almost identical. It's sitting in a low flow area of the tank right now and the polyps definitely do "pulse", though not like a xenia does. It could be a filter feeding action, that is kind of what it looks like. The polyps open and close randomly, in different sizes of "groups" in different spots. At the LFS it was in a heavier flow and I didn't see the pulsing action at all really, more of a waving in the current.

ReeferBoo, how is yours care wise?

Make a clip if possible

Mine is also in a high flow area right at the top of the tank, so high light and high flow. It has more than doubled in size in the last 8 months or so, it is also currently hosting my clown. I am pretty positive that it is a feeding response as I have noticed that the polyps open and close more rapidly when I add food to the water.

Here's some photos that show it's growth rate

Interesting. Yours looks like it has longer "tentacles" on it's polyps. I wonder if that is due to flow or different subspecies or something else. Maybe I'll have to move it into more flow. I don't remember the polyps on mine being that long at the LFS when it was in more flow, but it did have nice movement (waving in the current I mean) and less "pulsing" there.

I like the way it looks under your actinic/blue LED. Can't get that in my tank as it is a 50/50 PC lamp.

Do you keep LPS/SPS? What are your parameters like? With my 6 gallon the water tends towards a little dirty.

I can't say for sure but I think flow had something to do with it as well, as you can see the polyps are a lot longer in the second photo, after it has been in high flow for quite some time.

Yup, I have a mixed reef (check my sig for a more detailed description of the system), N and P is always 0 but I don't think the water being a little "dirtier" would affect it that much since it's a still a leather after all. ;)

I took a look at your build thread after posting, so had pretty much answered that question already;)

Thanks for all of the input though!

So it seems like the Sinularia and my Devil's Hand Sarcophyton are not playing nice. Relocated the sinularia as far away as I could get it this morning and might have to put some carbon in if that doesn't help. I hope they settle down ><.

Micro war games?

Yeah, I think so. It was fine for a few days, fully expanded and polyps extended, then it went into molt mode. Since it molted it has looked bad. I need to do a WC too, going to do it tonight. Might swap my Purigen for a new bag also. Close to that time anyway.

Use high flow to help shed quicker. I would do as you said...... keep it out of reach from more aggressive neighbors.

Thanks. It was in a low flow area, I moved it this morning into better flow which is also farther away from the sarcophyton. Hopefully it perks up.

That should work. Not sure about light intensity. But gradually increasing light it receives would be a safe bet. From vids, it seems that it can take as much light as most SPS corals. But I would be cautious while acclamating it to new tank.
