Egg Crate

How many of you use egg crate as a base underneath your aquascape, rather setting the rockwork on the glass itself? What's your reasoning, either way?

Not me, my rocks are right on the glass. My sand is about a half inch deep. I seem to recall egg crate making issues in cleaning or something like that.

I have in both my now retired Fluval Edge and my new 330l 3x2x2.

It's supposed to spread the load more evenly across the glass base, preventing scratches and the risk of cracking the glass.

I also put the rock in and make sure its stable before adding sand. That way any future tank inhabitants that like to dig or burrow can't undermine the rock work and cause catastrophic rock falls.

If you're worried about weight distribution and scratches on the bottom glass, get a 1/4" sheet of acrylic cut to fit under your rocks. I seriously doubt that egg crate will actually do that much.

I don't use it, Some friends of mine do but they have hundreds of pounds which I can see why they might want to use it.
