Hey guys, so i have done all the research and even brought the frag to the lfs i got it from. They told me it was not zoa pox but he didnt know exactly what it was, They asked if i wanted to exchange it in for a new frag and i said sure but they let me keep the original frag and gave me a nice green shroom for free. BUTTT i wanna get to the bottom of this because i dont want it to affect my other zoa's.

See the white "bumps" on the necks of the polyps?
If it ends up being zoa pox i might just toss it as it was only a $10 frag.

Thanks in advance guys!

George

I know the pictures are small and kinda suck but its the best my iphone 4 can do lol

It's a little hard to tell from the pics but from your description I would say yes.

I'd recommend a furan dip, it's worked for me in the past 100% of the time. (I have terrible luck with picking out zoas) Let me know if you plan to do it and I can give you my procedure :)

Hard to tell but kind of dose. Treat with furnan2 tho. I been down that road.. with my Japanese deep wate colonies.

Ants... was it furan 2?

Yep. Came in a box with 10 packets containing bright yellow powder for around $8 iirc at LFS.

Is the frag in a display tank or QT?

While I see the white spots you are referring to, I'm hesitant to call it zoa pox, only because that seems to be an amorphous catch-all term for various aliments. A few weeks back I ran into some issues with a colony of zoa, having spots much like yours and generally acting pissed at the world. After days of research I found a bunch of anecdotal information but nothing conclusive in terms of cause or treatment. I had two frags that were upset, one significantly more so than the other, I performed furan 2 dips on both and then manually removed the white spots with a razor and dentist pick. Worked for one frag but I lost the other, more upset piece. I have also had polyps develop white spots and seem no worse for the wear.

My opinion is that "zoa pox" itself is not what does in the polyps, "zoa pox" is a secondary effect of something else going wrong. Changes in temperature, water quality, coral agitators, etc. We see the spots and the behavior and assume cause and effect but my research has led me to believe this isnt necessarily a correlation equals causation scenario. If it were me I would see how things progress for another few days, if its obvious they're going down hill I'd try my hand at physical removal of the white spots. This may seem invasive but you have to remember how amazing these little guys are. We intentionally cut them in half to propagate, removing a small amount of tissue shouldnt kill a polyp that wasnt already too far gone to be saved. Now if a day or two passes and there isnt any change for the worse I'd wait it out.

Zoa can be pretty temperamental, sometimes they get upset and stay that way for days or a week or so for no real reason.

Wow thanks for the Im depth comment Kyle. I'm extremely new to the reef game, my tanks been set up for a little over a month now and this was my first coral that I picked up around 2 weeks ago, I know have ricordia florida, a bouncy ass yuma, green/blue shrooms and multiple different Zoas, as soon as I open my light my girlfriend got me CHRISTMAS morning Im gonna go pick up some torch heads and a duncan. I'm so so so hooked On it already.

But these polyps haven't had an issue in my tank. They have been open since I put them in and stay open all night long and wave in my moonlights. I only caught this a few days ago because I was doing rock work and brushed the frag and it closed for the first time. I'll see how it goes for a few days.

My worry is of it spreading to my other more expensive zoas, can this be contagious per say?

Thank you guys!!

I'm by no means an expert! Just learning as I go along ;) I'm sure some others will chime in as well. I just remember being very frustrated and scouring every post and site I could find about pox, spoke to a few very knowledgable people and there was very little consensus. I heard quite a few success stories using different methods and seems like everyone I spoke to had lost something to it.

Some say it slowly spreads outward from the "infection" site, some say its more a process of other variables and it simultaneously appears in different areas. Now if your tank is a month old is could be all sorts of different growing pains, what are your water parameters?

Pay close attention to the number and location of the pustules and see if you notice any change.
