Question about Clown harem tanks

I'm curious how well this works long term. There seems to be great success with heavy feeding, LOTS of clowns, lots of nems, and clean water. I've watched all of BRSTV's tank videos on their clown harem tank. They have like 29 black snowflakes and a ton of nems.

Also have read the thread on RC with the guy that has 27 clowns in one tank with a ton of nems.

I'm curious about this in smaller tanks. I'm not really considering it honestly for myself, more just idle pondering. I know 3 clowns don't work since you get a dominant pair that excludes or attacks the 3rd... But I am curious how we feel about say a 40G display with lots of nems to choose from with a group of 10-12 clowns from the same batch, or for example an IM fusion 30L with just a group of 8 clowns.I know you need numbers to help control aggression but what is the minimum number?

Depends, I wouldn't do a clownfish species/harem tank in anything smaller than a 50, because they're so messy and territorial. I'd do at least 10-15 fish, an adult pair and a bunch of babies. They don't have to be the brothers/sisters, or even the same lineage. I would keep them one species, however.

You could, but IMO it won't do much. Plus if they're all from the same parents you shouldn't breed them.

Agreed. That's a good point about not keeping them all from the same batch to prevent inbreeding. I wonder then if you would have issues getting like 3 snowflakes, 2 Picasso's, 1 platinum, 2 gladiators, and 2 normal. Assuming they were all babies when added. I'm just curious really of the science/method on it and what kind of factors affect it working vs them killing each other off.
