Surface Skimming

So I've just started my eco Pico 4 gal about 2 months ago and it's been doing quite well. I'm very happy with the clarity of the water/glass and my custom leds are wonderful for it. One problem, I have worked out a good method for surface slimming yet. I am using a jebao submersible pump for filtration rugh now and have been thinking about placing a black acrylic overflow box in the corner and then putting the submersible pump in it and having it pump the water out from there to achieve good skimmage but I have had no solid ideas of yet.

Anyone else have any success with any other methods?

I ha e about $30 invested in my aquarium right now. That includes everything from pump, tank, sand, live rock, porcelain crab, coral, cuatom light, etc. This project needs to drain as little from the main account as possible. Thank you for the suggestion, but I'm definite looking for a DIY project right now. Any other suggestions?

How about a section of ridged PVC tube with an elbow on the bottom of it connected directly to your pump inlet. Have the pipe break the surface of the water with an external filter pickup guard on it or some slits like an overflow so the water is drawn from the surface as opposed to the bottom. Maybe a few holes lower down the pipe to even out the water draw so you don't have a cascade falling down the pipe.

This spuns lIke something to think about. I don't have an ato, so a guaranteed water level is something I won't posses. Would this work?

Cut the slots deep enough/have the grate half submerged and yes. You could even go to the length of marking your intended water level on the pipe/grate to make it easier to work out when to top up and to where.

My fluval edge mini sump had an indicator in the overflow box in tank that reflected the level in the mini sump so when the water level dipped below it I knew it was time to top it off without having to look in the sump it's self.

With the slots just cut one half the length so you know that's where your water should sit.
