5 gallon bucket and buy a battery powered bubble box, BOOM. You're done.

Smith is right! I actually made that move at the end of the spring semester, length of the drive and all! I put my two little clownfish in a half-gallon cooler and they were fine the entire ride. You have more fish, so you'll definitely want more volume! :] And make sure the first thing you do when you arrive is get them set up in their tank again. If you've got a tank set up at the destination, awesome. If you're bringing the tank along on the trip, empty it of water as much as you can. If possible, just dump all the sand and get new sand to put in when you arrive (you don't want to swish around all that substrate during the drive).

Even though I have buckets I was planning on using a nice size cooler for the fish and should I use a heater on either idea ?

You can throw in some heat packs if where you're going is cold

Ok awesome and throw them in the bucket or cooler ?

You probably don't want to literally throw them in, especially if they're the average filled-paper-bag kind. Tape them to the top/side/bottom of the cooler, maybe, on the outside? They do get hot. You might just want to invest in an adapter for a regular heater and an air pump, unless the pump would be battery powered.

Yeah I was going to get a battery powered airstone and stick in there. The cooler is 7 gallons a little bigger then my five gallon bucket I just have to figure out how many heat pads to put under the cooler.. I only have to local LFS stores in town and the both are not help lol

I'd just use one at a time, at the bottom. Buy a few and test them out, maybe?

I would do a full up test of whatever you decide, water and all. See what temps you get, etc. 5.5 hrs isn't too long. Do you have to set up a tank when you get there?

I would bag them up like I was shipping them, but then I have an O2 tank in the shop...

no i have to set the tank up once i get there i am even thinking of getting rid of the sand and buying a new bag but I'm not sure, it won't be cold once i get there but where i am now till about half way down there it will probably be cold so i rather be safe them sorry lol

Do you keep the sandbed vacuumed and pristine? I'd really go for the new sand. If you were thinking about changing to another grain size or something, now's the time. You lose the sand's ability to filter, but you also lose all the detritus trapped in there. I kept my sand when I moved and holy god, you don't want to know. The sand will shift around, swirl, upend itself, etc. And so will all the grossness. I'm not sure you want to deal with the filtration/nutrient issues you'd have afterwards.

I have to test to see if the pads placed on the bottom of the cooler will actually work because i think it might be to thick. Thanks for the tip i might think about it thats just more work for me since i don't have another tank set up down there its more work for me to do, and i want to be able to stick the fish in as fast as possible once i arrive
