Chaeto in an Aquanano 40 - What would you do?

After using my AQ 40 stock light to light up the chaeto in the rear chamber, it has finally given up the ghost. Looking at the chaeto (which is a little dirty), I'm dubious as to whether its actually growing or not. It is great for harbouring lots of life but I'm not sure if its off-set by the amount of detritus it seems to collect.

On one hand, I can remove the chaeto so less detritus is collected and save a few pennies that I was using to light the chaeto that didn't seem to grow, at the expense of all the pod-life in there...

Or rinse the chaeto in old salt water when I do a change, and invest in a light that will meet the chaeto's needs.

What would you do? If leaning towards a new light, what would you recommend? Already toying with the idea of a innovative marine desktop mini-reactor to tackle any phosphate issues.

Thanks in advance

You really just have decide if you want to control phosphate with a refugium or chemical media. I'm not opposed to either method, but I've typically used chemical media (Phosguard or GFO).

You can rinse Chaeto in saltwater if you wish. As far as a light, I'm not sure what you have for space or budget. One of these bulbs (with a gooseneck fixture) should get you better growth: http://coralcompulsion.com/led/led-21w-REF-GRO People also use cheap compact fluorescent bulbs (with cheap clamp on fixtures). Although these solutions might be better suited for larger refugiums.

Again, for the limited space you have, chemical media (like Phosguard in a media bag) might be a good fit.
