A mountaineers adventure back into reefing!

Hey guys, I have been a member for ages but never really posted anything. Back in the day before college I had a 180 sps, 10 hex zoanthid garden, 12 jbj, and a 30 gallon mixed. After I went to college I had my controller crash and my 180 went down. So I took everything down and been out of the hobby for the past 5 years. WVU takes a toll on you! With paintball, my fraternity, and just being a damn Mountaineer I just didn't have time to do anything but party, study, and party a little more.

My girlfriend saw my 12 gallon jbj in the corner when we where moving and said she would really like a fish tank, and I sold my 360 Modena. So I figured why not setup a small nano. Did a 24 hour vinegar bath, freshwater wash, and a 24 hour water test.

Tank

Jbj 12 gallon tank

-hood has been removed

-return pump replaced with maxi jet 900

Vortech 10es

Kessil 150 10K will supplement with moonlights as well

Filtration

Chemi pure elite, activated carbon, and purigen

3 pounds of liverock and 10 pounds of base rock

10 pounds of live sand

Livestock plans

2-clowns (not sure what kind as of yet, thinking onyx)

1-blenny or goby not sure yet

2-3 sexy anemone shrimp

Zoanthids, Ricardias, gsp, Xenia

Some SPS

Some snails and hermits

12/7

Added sand, liverock, and saltwater. Everything else will be in tomorrow. I used petco pre made saltwater to fill it, will use ro/di to top off and mix sw. Waiting for my new ro/di filters to come in. Everything else will be here tomorrow via ups and marinedepot. Then cycling starts!

Lol you know how it is, the best 5 years of my life! I love my time spent so much I'm moving back as soon as my company is up and running smoothly. As John Denver says "Radio reminds of my home far away, driving down the road I get a feeling that I should have been home yesterday, YESTERDAY!"

I had a cabin growing up in trout pond/lost river, right by George Washington national forest and trout pond park.

Hey guys,

Got my package in yesterday from Marinedepot. Everything made it, and had no problem's with anything. I soaked the dry rock and added it to the tank. Attached the Kessil and gooseneck, Everything is how I expected and looking well.

Time to start the cycle now. Water temps holding steady at 81 degrees. Salinity 1.025. The liverock that I have, has some hair algae. But I will take care of that in a week or so.

If you can get the temp to 78-79 imo its a safer temp. More room to rise to a dangerous level if a heater fails and if the heater is sized right may not even be able to hit like 86.

Got sick of seeing the surface scum, so I just purchased a JBJ surface skimmer to get rid of that. I plan to add a few small pieces of LR rubble tonight, I am going to stop by the petco by my work to pick up some small stuff I need tonight.

Wow, you are too young to remember John Denver! I think of those lyrics when my husband and I ride through the West Virginia mountains. We live just north in the Pittsburgh area and there is no better motorcycle roads than in WV!

Hey good luck with the nano tank, they can be a lot of fun.

Country roads is a freshman requirement if you go to WVU!! I went to petco to get a troccheus snail, and a blue legged hermit to get rid of some of the hair algae on the live rock. Looks like some Zoa hitchhiked in with the liverock. When I was at the "lfs" they had a small clown that was in bad shape, i negotiated them down to $5. As I figured my tank was going to be a better place to heal then the nastiness they had him in.

He immediately looked much better last night and tonight. Was eating this morning, I know it was way too soon. But I felt bad for the little guy.

Evap rates have been real low for being hoodless, only about 1/2 cup-cup of evap a day.

Water temp is holding steady at 79-80! Gonna be gone for a few days, have to pick up a 458 Speciale for a client of mine. Its a hard life driving exotics all day!

That explains it, I did not know that about WVU. LOL I have gone there for concerts but that is about it.

8am tank temp lights off 79 12:30pm lights on for 4 hours: 81

Seachem marine test kit

Ph:8.0

Ammonia: 0.002

Nitrite: 0.003

Nitrate: 0

Been running the vortech on 30-40% power on reef crest. Re aquascaped everything, found some generic brown zoanthid hitchhikers on some of the liverock. They have been opening up. Fred the fish as my girlfriend has named his is eating, and looking so much better then at the store.

This is my plan for my stocking of the tank.

Full stock list
Percula clown
Onyx clown
Yasha goby with a pistol shrimp

Zoanthid garden
GSP
Acan&few other Lps
Assorted sps
Ricordea

turbo snail
2x red legged hermits
2 Astraea snails
2 troccheus snails sp?
A few small other inverts

I am thinking about upgrading to a 20L or something like that. Or maybe a slightly larger tank, I want a slightly larger tank, and it would be much easier if I had a sump. So I am looking into a sump/skimmer/fuge/controller unit.

No no, my parents weren't that stupid. I had my A4 down at school, but the roads in Morgantown are horrible so I picked up a wrx for my last years of college. I work at Audi, but I also export/locate cars for clients. I just sold my 360, which was my first Ferrari. Not my type of car to be honest.

The tank cycled fast, ammonia jumped then nitrites quickly followed. Now tracking ammonia 0, nitrites almost undetectable, nitrates jumped up to 3-4ppm. Did a big 6 gallon water change using ro/di water and Red Sea coral pro salt.

Added in Chemi pure elite/purigen/fresh carbon.

Water temps are acceptable 78-82. I would like to get it to stay steady at 78-79. Going to experiment with some PC fans this week.

Went to the LFS, first time looking at corals in ages. It felt amazing! Picked up small colony of eagle eye and rasta Zoanthids. As well, I picked up some green star polyps. Will get some pictures up tonight, everything is open and looking great. Diatoms and hair algae is showing up in the tank, I may add a few more snails soon.

I have been eyeing a miracles aquarium 40 short using starfire glass and a center overflow. 36x18x16

Diatoms and hair algae is starting to show up. Much expected... Picked up some more snails to take care of this problem, and the Lfs just happened to have a small yellow watchman goby and some sexxy anemone shrimp.

Thank you guys for the kind words, the cycle happened much quicker then I anticipated.

Nice scape every one looks happy too

I am not 100% happy with the scape, but not much room in the 12 gallon nano cube, but my new tank will have that!

Looking good. I like the shimmer!

The shimmer is out of this world, much more then my old MH that I had on my 180!

12/17

Fred the clownfish passed away last night, I do not know what happened to him. Everything else in the tank is looking great. I am having issues with the sexxy anemone shrimp getting stuck in the overflow, it baffles me how that happens. Going to pick up my black/white and snowflake clown tonight. I was going to trade fred to my LFS to get them... Did a 4 gallon water change yesterday with Red sea coral pro salt.

I know the feeling I've got a 27 gallon cube and it still feels like a matchbox.my main thing is the lack of room to spread the scape out
