Hello all,

DSC00355.jpg

I have decided to create a thread for our new tank. This is our 2nd tank (in 5 months - yes we fell victim to the hobby) and we were very lucky to be able to purchase the tank already built from a fellow nano-reef.com member.

Let me first start by saying that this tank is custom built by Hecdr34 and it is amazing. His craftsmanship and creativity are impressive. He used zero screws on the build. All the lines are clean and everything feels well put together. To combine a frag tank is brilliant. The fact we can take out the frag rack and use it as a 2nd smaller DT is even cooler.

The aquascape continues to evolve. The 3 main islands are glued together to form caves and tunnels.

The BRS Filter Sock mount was way too big so we are only using 1 piece from it. I used some other plastic to form sort of a bracket to hold it level in the sump. Fits perfectly.

The BRS Mini Reactor will be behind the sump and you cannot see it when it is back there. I may mount it up a bit higher so that you can see it. Clearly the idea of this tank is to show off not only the livestock, but the equipment.

The center chamber of the sump will be a refugium with Cheato and maybe some other macro and rock/sand.

The tank will be a mixed reef with some fish and inverts. Plan at this point is 1 Helfrichi Fire Fish and 1 Green Clown Goby together with some Sexy Shrimp and Pom Pom Crabs.

Not sure we will need a Protein Skimmer so we have held off on buying one of those. We will do weekly water changes so not sure the skimmer will do much.

The Apex setup will be mounted on the back of the stand.

Thanks all for checking it out and any suggestions!

wow that tank design is amazing. Can you please describe how the frag rack is incorporated?

tank > sump > frag rack > tank?

Water falls into the overflow in the DT and the overflow in the FT down to the left chamber of the sump through the filter sock. Then the water is pumped up to a T where the flow splits to the FT return and to the DT return. We can control how much flow goes to each return with 2 ball valves.

Hi all,

I am in the market for new lights for this tank.

I want something for the DT that can be controlled by the Apex while also providing storm features.

Also, what type of light do you suggest for the frag tank?

Thanks!

I used this for Fuge. Search ebay they're like 3 or 4 bucks for 15watt LED (5 3watt LED's). Use the cool white, which is around ~6000k. Pick your own lamp holder and install. I could see you using some kind of cool pendant lamp holder with that tank. Grows Cheato like crazy, I have to prune at least once a week.

Hi all,

So I am leaning towards the Nanobox Mini Tide w/ Storm controller and Moonlight upgrade for the display tank. I have been speaking with Dave over the past week or 2 and he has been very helpful with my questions and the custom design.

Having a hard time finding the light shown above for the Refugium, but what do you guys think of this one? I have read that going with LED is better than CFL due to the efficiency. Also, LED is cooler? For a fuge like I will have (the chamber holds maybe 2.3 gallons of water and roughly 8" deep) should this be enough daylight @ 5000K? I am looking for a very small pendant mount like suggested by Marc. I think I will need to go to Home Depot to look at them and might need to modify. I can do that or either mount with screws to the wood above the refugium. My concern there is the heat accumulating between the light fixture and the wood.

I am not sure still about the frag tank and how to light that (I want LED).

Thanks for the help!

Must say, it's amazing setup. There will be always nice and beautyful "clean" main reef tank.

Good job, I like red piping. Where did you buy it? Normaly in US stores? I can order these red pipes only from Vertex Aquaristic.

Marc,

What Base type? E27 for the screw?

George,

Thanks. Fellow reefer built it from the ground up. The piping is painted red. Not sure the type of paint he used which can be submersed in the salt water though.

I believe he said it was krylon fusion paint

Yep E27 is the screw type, get the 15 watt, nice & bright. Comes from China, so a couple weeks, but looks like you're still in setup mode.

I am about to order 3 of those. Says it will take 2-4 weeks which is no problem as yes, definitely still in setup mode.

Do they fit in standard light sockets (considered a medium base bulb)?

Thanks for the suggestion!

Yep, standard socket, here's a pic of my setup. Not as fancy as yours! Lol

Hi all,

Do you guys cure your dry rock in a bucket of salt water with a heater (80 degrees or so) and a powerhead before adding to the DT (I bought 10 lbs from BRS - Pukani, Fiji & Reef Saver mix)? I know the Reef Save does not need cured. I will be adding 10 lbs of Bahamas Oolite sand to the DT as well. Or, should I just cycle the rock with the sand? FYI - I am in no rush as this is a 2nd tank build that I want to do perfectly.

Thanks!
