Help with installing my first sump

OK. I've been reefing for about a year now and have started about 4 tanks so far (2 currently up).

My tanks have been either AIO or use HOB filter but i want to start one with a sump just for the added experience.

I have an empty "MicroReefs" 7 gal laying around and a 5 gal AGA tank. I plan on using the rimless Microreefs tank for the display and the 5 gal for the sump and i have a few questions. (Total water volume would be about 10 gallons).

1. Would a Herbie overflow setup be practical on this small of a tank and if not, then what type?

2. What size drain and return lines should i use

3. Pump recommendations for strong flow.

4. Any ideas on flexible piping and connectors. (i would prefer hard plumbing but we may be moving in 6 to 8 months).

Any help and/or advice you could give me will be greatly appreciated as this will be my first attempt at a sump.

Hey, I just finished this process of planning, research, design, and build, and finally got everything up and running yesterday. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. It was a bit nerve wracking trying to figure it all out and order the right things.

Small Herbie drain dead silent. 3/4 PVC and silicone tubing. I'll take some pics later today and lay it out for you.

Herbie souls work great, as quiet as they come. I would use 3/4"

3/4" drains and 1/2" return

I wous look into sicce, prob a 1 or 1.5

Flex souls work alright as lo ng as you use clamps on all the fittings you can. Tho I personally ally would still hard plumb and then re do it when you move, your not looking at much pipe, and with a few unions you wouldnt need to re do any of it I wouldmy think

I would probably go with a 10 gal sump, there cheap enough and I expect you'd appreciate the added volume later on
