antsypants
Hello again, Nano-Reef Some of you know my little picotope, set up summer of 2013. For those who don't, the thread link is in my signature if you've got some time to peruse my initial saltwater system. Anyways, summer of 2014 comes by and I managed to convince my old teacher to setup a classroom tank (She already wanted one; I was just the catalyst). After some debate, here's what we've settled with (tank began cycle mid-September):Current FTS:Equipment and Filtration: -7.5g Low Iron Cube from PicO Aquariums -50W Cobalt Heater -OCReef's Par 38 (6 Royal Blue, 4 White, 2 Red) -AC 70 -1 in. Technically taken in November but sh. November, 14 December, 2014 January, 2015 As a side note, progress on this tank will be slow as I can only work on it when I'm in town during breaks but my old teacher is more than capable of maintaining this tank. However updates will be few and far between, unfortunately. I hope that doesn't deter you from following along though; experience is the best teacher and the amount of it in this forum is immeasurable. -Anthony Link to comment
antsypants
Adding some pictures from today~ A kenya/shell from my pico http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_8996_zpsb3ddde05.jpg.html] Picked up a baby torch with two heads for $10, can't pass that up. We'll see how it does. http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_8999_zps9556403e.jpg.html] One of the ceriths with some dragonsbreath. http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_9001_zpsda9f0944.jpg.html] FTS featuring the firefish pair, Bunsen and Burner http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_8992_zpsdaa097d4.jpg.html] I know sub 8 gallons isn't optimal for a pair of firefish but we've agreed to take the fish back the minute they show more discomfort than a fish should when first being introduced. So far, they've both been extremely calm and as a bonus, readily accept pellets. Another bonus, we chose the two smallest firefish at the store, and it seems they've bonded on the way home . The tank does have a lid that I removed when taking pictures in case anyone was wondering. I won't be seeing the tank until next month as far as I can see, but I will be receiving updates from my teacher and I will be online to respond to you guys, so please leave a comment! -Anthony Link to comment
antsypants
I'm in town for a couple weeks, so I went to pick up some coral for the classroom tank Pics pics pics Orange/green blasto with an evil looking paly http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_9081_zps6e1dc314.jpg.html'> Toadstool in the fore, candy cane in the back. I might have to get myself a toadstool now... I finally get why people like em haha. So pretty http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_9080_zps0f29ae0a.jpg.html'> One of the firefish. Couldn't get a pic of the two together :/ http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_9131_zps567a5b9b.jpg.html'> Angled FTS displaying the tank lid. I couldn't post the full on shot because the lid wasn't attached, making the tank look slanted. http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/226b083c-28af-44a2-8d28-941dd2f6784a_zpse12e2988.jpg.html'> Anyways, that's all the new stuff. Future plans include a porcelain crab/nem pair. Still debating between rock flower, bubble tip, and maxi mini. Thanks for looking! Link to comment
antsypants
Updating for January. I was told that the toadstool melted over winter break :/ Everything else pulled through though. Not much else to report, however, so not too many picturez this month. Finally completed DIY screen top, attached via neodymium magnets http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_9466_zps117b65f8.jpg.html'> Firefishy. This one's fins got torn up a bit. Hopefully it regenerates. Otherwise, they're both very active, eat like pigs, aren't afraid of loud classrooms, etc. http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_9444_zps5a68098b.jpg.html'> Current FTS http://s1361.photobucket.com/user/antsypants77/media/IMG_9468_zpsaa07c12b.jpg.html'> Link to comment

supernip
you should consider getting new fish. firefish dart horizontally and you're severely limiting their movement irrespective of tank volume Link to comment

I'd give you some of mine if you were local. It grows fast! And yeah, I was glad they got along day one you should consider getting new fish. firefish dart horizontally and you're severely limiting their movement irrespective of tank volume I agree that tank shape is considerably more important than tank size when keeping fish but I figured it really comes into play more with big swimmers like tangs. From my observations, firefish tend to just hover in both big and small tanks, only ever darting to get back to the little cave they've dug beneath the rocks. One of the reasons we chose firefish for this tank was because they don't swim around much, but if that changes, back they go Link to comment
Merthynia
I really like that you have the lid secured with magnets. That is a good idea to help prevent other pets from bumping it off also. Sometimes my kitties get more ornery than usual. Link to comment

Ah, oops I think I'm being a bit unclear, haha this tank is my biology teacher's, not mine. She teaches in high school and after I graduated I visited a few times to help with the set up. I just keep this thread up to remind myself of the details Link to comment
