Lens Question

Hello,

I read the article concerning which lens to use and thought if someone has tried this it may save me some headaches and money. In the article it stated to use the same angle lens through the setup. I will be building a LED light for a 120 gallon freshwater tank. I know that light requirements for salt and fresh are different but the lens should apply for both, I think. I had thought about using broader lens in the back of the tank where taller plants would be planted and narrower lens in the front of the tank to reach foreground and carpet plants requiring more light. I have been thinking of using either 3 or 4 rows of lights. The row next to the front of the tank would have more LEDs and narrower lens. Is this theory correct or am I missing something?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Cecil

With freshwater, you certainly don't need as much light overall as compared to a reef. Even on the reef side of things, people are building fixtures without lenses and are keeping anything they want in tanks similar in depth to yours (assuming you have a standard 24" tall 120g tank). As a result, you shouldn't need to use optics if the array is sized appropriately. Without lenses, you get far more even spread of light over the tank, and better blending of colors when going with more of a full spectrum setup.

I would set it up without optics to begin with, then add as you see fit depending on the needs of the plants.
