Yeah you can break it up with a hammer and a chisel (or a screw driver you don't care about). It's ok to have more rock than you need. It gives you more rock to work with when you are designing a scape - you don't have to use all of it. I have a box in my basement with some rock that I am not using. You never know when you may need some rock... maybe for another build, or to use as rubble in a fuge. You never know.

Also you do not need 14 pounds of rock just because your tank is 14G. The 1 pound per gallon of rock is to be taken with a grain of salt and is more of a guide line than a rule. The whole purpose of the rock is to give your inhabitants places to live and hide, coral placement, and to act as a biological filtration medium. Beneficial bacteria will grow on your rock and as the water passes through it, it will help to clean your water column. Ideally you just want a good amount of surface area for water to flow through. Do what you think looks good.

So day one is started. Can't see a thing. lol I used all the rock and added five pounds of live sand. It's a little noisy but nothing we can't get use too.

So now I wait.

Also remember that dry rock does not weigh as much as live rock since it's, well dry.

Good start. I started with a BC14. I learned a ton from that tank.

OK did some of the test today.

Salt it only 1.22 so dissolving some in a cup to add slowly to try and get it up or is suppose be down at this point? It was right when I set up the tank.

Ammonia .50

Nitrite .25

Nitrate 0

Question. There is a film on the glass is that my salt?

Tank is cycled but I am still not done researching to add fish. I did get some snails and ordered some plants that well be here later today.

Tank is doing great. Today I received four certified home grown corals for beginners.

white pom pom zenia

lemon tree coral

neon pineapple tree

glove polyp

One of the trees was broken not sure which but I glued it and hope it well be ok. I think I did it when I was unpacking. Not sure since they were shipped in 6 bags and I could not see anything.

Tiny tiny little things I hope they do ok.

Congrats on your new coral. They are all fast growers and you will be fragging them in no time.

The photo with two corals in it has the broken one on the left.

I think that is the xenia that is opening up. Three more have opened while I type this. lol cool Oh and the hitch hiker is doubled in size. You can see it in the bottom right of the second photo. Sorry the photos are so bad. Think I need to clean the glass better.
