i have now cycle my tank for about 5 days and done my first water test today. all ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are showing as 0, could this result be false or my tank just simply finish cycling in 5 days?

You probably did not cycle at all. We need more details. What are you using for an ammonia source? How big a tank? Salinity, temp, etc etc.

Question: Did you get your live rock, live sand, AND water from an already established tank from your LFS? If so, it's possible you won't see a cycle.

I actually did this and did not see a cycle. However, the rock/sand/water were from a VERY established, beautiful tank that has been running for 5+ years.

Maybe, but not likely after a week with no heater.

Also using old water has little to do with it. The rocks and sand is most important regards bacterial load.

my tank is a 32g tank and i got the life rock and sand from the LFS, i dont know how long they have kept the live rock for. i will prob wait for another couple of days and do another water test just to be sure.

True, but no idea where he got his water from (if he's using tap, etc...).

what temperature is the tank water with out the heater on? Is the room that the tank is in held at a constant temperature?

If your tank is already at a stable 78 degrees or so and the room that the tank is in remains at a stable temperature then the answer is no, you do not need your heater plugged in. If there is a chance that the room temp could drop significantly then yes... plug'er in. A lot of folks don't even have a heater in their system.

water temp was at 22c before i use heater, and my water is filtered seawater

Too cold at 22c. Since you don't seem to want to answer our questions I will assume you have it figured out. Good luck!

Hi Buzz, thought i have answered your question, my tank is 120litre tank with a 30 litre sump, the water i used is straight from the sea and filtered, with live rocks from the fish store, i have a 2 inch live sand bed. since i start the tank cycle there are some grey algae looking hair growing on my life rocks, i'm not sure what that is so i did water test on ammonia, nitrate and nitrite, all result is showing as 0, water temperate is current at 26 Celsius. i do not have reading for Ph and salinity, since the water i use is sea water i assume those reading should be fine. but what i dont understand is why its growing algae but water test result is different from what i expect from the water cycle.

Lots of factors must be considered regarding algae blooms. Ammonia, Nitrates, Phosphates, light conditions, ph (which can swing several points over the course of a day) for starters.

I'd say turn on the heater and turn off your lights. A pic of the growth in question will help determine what it is
