Drexellake
Cool, I saw some corals for $300 apop so wondering if anyone here spends that much. Yea, not even when I have more experience. There are plenty out there for much less that are quite awesome. The most I've ever spent on a single creature in this hobby was about $75. I'm sure that will go up some now that I'm keeping corals, but I do draw the line around $125. Just self discipline. And I don't want to get my ass kicked by my wife. Link to comment
Weasel Baron
used to work in a wholesaler in CA, saw the prices that even the most cherry corals came in with...no where near what online vendors pump them out for. IMO "lost livestock" and cost of operation dont account for a 1000% price hike. Im just getting back into the hobby and seeing non-wholesale prices drop my jaw these two were from my old tank; less than $40 wholesale Link to comment
jgaepi
One massive blasto with about 10 babies. Cost a whopping ... $298. Link to comment

basser1
I remember the chalice craze when it started a few years ago. These things were selling for several hundreds of dollars for 1 eye!! Now some years back, I bought a single polyp of a purple people eater paly for $100. I still have it, but have only 3 polyps now! Talk about a slow grower! Here is a pic of some from zoa.id Link to comment

Weasel Baron
there are a few online vendors that are more guilty of this than others... Im torn between saying "good for them, a fool and his money are soon parted" and "WTF MAN, youre ruining this hobby!" Link to comment

I get what you mean on pricing but remember that Super bright, crazy colored corals are few and far between and if the wholesaler asks $200 the retailer will usually ask double that. Everything else is hype and if you'd rather pay $200 pp from one person than $12 pp with another because of the name said person is a moron. Link to comment

Paandemonium
Im totally fine w/ a vendor asking for double wholesale on a cherry piece, but this $1200 for a single eye of chalice stuff? If they transshipped and the rest of the box was crap I can understand it. Idk how it was at the company you worked at but with many places now if you want "that" chalice you're also gonna have to take 3 bread and butters and prices have gone up. Retail shops have it a little easier because people come in for bread and butter but online only vendors will always pay premium especially if they only want the good stuff. Not only that but Golden shipments are stupid expensive especially if only one piece is being bought. I don't condone the price gouging I'm just saying that they as vendors have the right to price something as they wish. If one doesn't like the price send a message to the vendor by not purchasing it. Current most expensive frags, I don't really "buy" things anymore, I trade mostly Sexy Corals Sexy Monster (goes for like $300 an eye?) I have six frags of this JF Fairy Tales, Paid $60 online for $190 Hallucinations Free technically they were around $20ish Cheapest paid frag I like these a lot $15 Link to comment
