I have yet to experience a diatom bloom and I started my tank with cured live rock from the LFS. It has been up for 5 months now so I'm still wondering when it is coming. Link to comment
thomas8man Posted November 10, 2014 Share Posted November 10, 2014 Diatoms are going to be there but never know one day there might be a bloom for a bit and having the right Clean up crew will keep it control. I added more rock to my already cycled tanks and my sally foot crab is having a hay day on the algae. I wouldn't worry about the diatoms cured rock just means that cycling is pretty much done for you just gotta wait for a month and do some water changes and then you tank should be ready. However I've been very unclear if this is just with uncured rock, cured, or occurs with both. thanks again nano-reeefers! site's been great so far, very helpful! rengb6 Posted November 10, 2014 Share Posted November 10, 2014 The silica in your sand can cause diatom blooms. I had a small bloom at the end of my cycle using dry rock. It cleared up on its own in a couple of weeks. You can reduce your lighting and the diatoms will disappear but as soon as you go back to a normal lighting schedule they'll return. It's better to let them consume whatever is in your tank and then die on their own. Link to comment
