Purigen vs. Chemipure Elite vs. Chemipure Blue

I've heard Purigen is much better than Chemipure but I've also heard that it tends to bleach the color out of colors. I'm also not sure if it has a good GFO.

I've heard Chemipure Elite is nearly as good as Purigen and definitely has a good GFO.

I've heard Chemipure Blue is also very good but it has the advantage of not removing as much of the important elements from the water that corals need - compared two the Purigen and Chemipure elite. I'm also not sure if the Chemipure Blue has GFO.

I have a 10 gallon nano that is doing beautifully. I"ve been using the Chemipure Blue with 'satisfactory results' but I'm not convinced that there might be a better option for my needs.

I would love to hear from you about what you know and what you've found based on your own experience in comparison of these products. Also, if there is a better product that I'm not aware of, please let me know. I look forward to learning more from you.

I've heard that the only difference between chemipure elite and blue is that blue has purigen. Not sure if that's true, but if it is guess you don't need to buy purigen.

Chemipure in all its forms is handy and is somewhat effective. I used it for a couple of years...until....I found that ROX Carbon and GFO are much more effective and as a bonus, more cost effective.

BTW....The ion exchange stuff is twisted science.

Hello,

I am a bit confused. I thought using both Chemi Pure Elite and Purigen was the way to go? I was about to buy Chemi Pure Elite and then I researched some more and stumbled on this thread.

Currently I am using Purigen in the 100 ml bag, the stock mechanical sponge that came with my IM Nuvo and the stock phosphate sponge that came with my IM Nuvo. This is all in the Custom Caddy Medea Basket. I also use a filter pad. I was planning on switching the mechanical sponge to filter floss and the phosphate sponge to Chemi Pure Elite while keeping the Purigen bag and the filter pad. Would this not be a good combo? I do not have a media reactor. In the other chamber of the Nuvo 40 I have a small refugium going with only the mechanical sponge for filtration. I also have a protein skimmer.

Also, I have been reading about Phosguard and PhosBan. Does anybody use either? Would this replace Chemi Pure Elite and could be used together with Purigen instead?

Thanks for any help!

I may be wrong on what exactly plain chemipure is, but from my understanding its more or less just granular activated carbon. Chemipure elite is GAC and GFO, and I'm not really sure what chemipure blue is. That said, purigen is a plastic resin that binds nitrogenous compounds. You can't really compare which is better in a broad sense because purigen and the chemipure line are different things meant to accomplish different goals.

I'd recommend doing as others have said: get bulk GAC and GFO and mix it yourself. Then you can run purigen in conjunction with that, and since you can refresh the purigen you don't have to throw it away once its exhausted (if chemipure blue does in fact have purigen, or a purigen like compound).

So I tried the Chemipure Blue and wasn't overly impressed. Some of you have mentioned that mixing Rox Carbon and GFO are better and cheaper. I'm not familiar with how I would go about doing that. Would I just buy a nylon bag to hold the mixture and tie it off? Is Rox a specific brand of carbon? What is GAC? Is GAC Rox Carbon? Also, I've searched for GFO, but haven't been able to find a product by that name.

Could someone give me specific product names (and reputable brand names) so I can get a better idea of what I'm looking for? It would be a huge help and much appreciated.

Also, when using the Rox Carbon and GFO, is it safe to use it in conjunction with Purigen? And does Purigen bleach out coral?

One last question about Purigen -- Is it similar in shape, size, and purpose of the Biomax filter media for the Aquaclear power filter?

Basically the tank can explode.

Fancy talk you guys would understand but with blue don't also run purigen. Fine with elite and purigen.

If it didn't explode then whatever. Dont fix what's not broke.

So do you think I'm wasting my money running CPB and Purigen? Did they say what was the downside?

I can't say for sure. It was at a trade show so a lot gets lost and all sciency chemistry which goes over most my head.

Blue basically has purigen in it. So it's kind of over kill. If you want the true low down send a note to Boyd and they can explain.

i have ran filter floss and chemi pure elite for about 4 or 5 years now with great success.

Is purigen really worth adding also? I have never have used it before.

Me too, but I have been using Chemipure in conjunction with purigen, since most people here said that it worked better like that. I have been doing this for about 2 years and can't honestly say that I have seen better results. Go figure. But now it has been mentioned that to just use CMPB and not use Purigen anymore, so there you go.

Although I am not 100% sure, I believe what is being referred to is ROX carbon by AquaMaxx and the GFO is granular ferric oxide which is designed to remove phosphate. The GFO is manufactured by a number of different companies. Check out www.Marinedepot.com. You can do a simple search for both items. My tank is not far enough along for these as I am just ordering my rock today.

Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong on my interpretation of the products mentioned.

Steve, since you da man, can you give some feedback to Boyd that the 5.5oz is still HUGE for a lot of nano setups. I need to use two compartments in your in tank media basket just to run the media.

I want a 3.1oz Mini bag like the Elite!

They are coming out with a smaller blue version, possibly ready next month. I have a sample of it from MACNA in August, it's a perfect size and smaller than the 3.1oz. Comes packaged like a laundry detergent puck size and shape.

This place seems to have ChemiPureBlue Nano, but shipping kills it for me.

Steve, when u gettin this???

Ha, jelly fish art is owned by the son of the owners of Boyd. Guessing he got first dibs.

I just asked Boyd again a min ago, I figured next month after an email blast they just had about it featured at a trade show.
