chrisnif
It's been a bit of time since I have done a reef tank but I'm setting up my new nano and its dawned upon me I'm going to need to purchase salt mix I used to use good old instant ocean, and I had GREAT results with Salinity from Aqua Vitro. What do you guys recommend? Link to comment
CronicReefer
Personally I use instant ocean reef crystals. Good price and quality. Link to comment
kylhcky
after using red sea coral pro and researching it against many other salt brands i am honestly making the switch to kent marine salt mix, not only is it cheaper, it's calcium and mag levels are through the roof compared to others. k4ndyk1ng
I use h2ocean salt because it is the cheapest and easiest to get down here Link to comment
sepulvd
I use regular IO no problems so far Link to comment
Mr. Microscope
I use Kent Reef salt, but I haven't experimented with many others. Kent's numbers are nice and high and I get it shipped free. So, the mail carrier does the bulk of the lifting. Link to comment
jservedio
The best brand of salt is the brand of salt that best matches the parameters you wish to keep with the least amount of adjustment. For me, that is Brightwells NeoMarine since it always mixes within +/- 5ppm of my tank - I use a measuing spoon instead of a digital scale to meausure out my salt so it isn't perfect. As long as the salt is homogenous, has a good track record, and mixes fairly easily - the better it matches to your tank's parameters the better it'll be. Since Unique Coral uses NeoMarine at their facility and I get the majority of my retail-bought corals from them, it definitely helps with making the transition after shipping that much easier - always a nice benefit. This x1,000. Just be consistent with your water parameters. For me, Red Sea Coral Pro suits my needs and the corals seem to do well...... Link to comment
gus6464
I use h2ocean salt because it is the cheapest and easiest to get down here That salt is da bomb. Rich in tasty Mg. When I made my own water that's what I used. Now I just use filtered ocean water. Link to comment
Jstn
Instant ocean and do more water changes with the money saved Link to comment
Tamberav
I use Kent... mixes up high Ca/Mg which I like. It's cheap and free shipping. Use whatever you want. Link to comment

farkwar
I like Kents, its the least expensive, high quality. $45 for 4 50gallon bags from Fosters. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4871 Link to comment

Sk8n Reefer
This is my 1st tank using Kent- I really like it- as other have said- it's cheap and it seems to mix up very predictable- same parameters batch after batch. It's the same salt my lfs uses so my frags grow up in that same environment . You'll see amazing tanks on here all using different salts- having a good quality water source is just as important- probably even more! Link to comment
sean1986
Red sea Pro, look at its numbers they speak for themselves . Link to comment
charnelhouse
I'm in the "Kent for the price point" boat. My experience is limited and I have never used anything else, but Kent works great for me. No SPS in my tank though. Link to comment

GHill762
asking what the best salt is, is kinda like asking what the best brand of shoes is, you're going to get a lot of different answers and all will be based on a different perspective.. best means different things to different people. I use IO:Reef Crystals, not because it's "the best" but because I can get it locally and it's priced fairly well. For me, access to the salt makes it "best" because if I am out I can stop and get some, rather than pay shipping and wait several days.. if you're in an area with a good selection of fish stores you're likely to have more local options than I have, but for me IO:RC is the only thing available local, so that's what I go with. Fishsticks2187
I currently use tropic Marin- bio-actif salt mix. I always thought this was the best one out there but after reading this thread I think I'm going to switch over to Kent's lol. Does anyone know why Kent's (about $50 for 200 gallons) is so much cheaper then tropic Marin bio-actif ($98 for 200 gallon). I always thought it cost more bc it was better, but looking at the numbers it's seems almost the same Link to comment

Pancetta
I agree with GHill762. This question seems to come up every few months. It is like asking a bunch of car guys what their favorite motor oil is. Everybody has an opinion. I use Red Sea Coral Pro. I am a newbie but, this is the brand that lot of my more experienced friends use. I have asked several of my LFS what they use. None of them use Red Sea but all of them seemed to think it was a good salt. They seem to use cheaper brands. Link to comment
