Fan wiring

I want to wire a couple of fans into my stand and I'm not sure how to go about it. I plan on using some quiet pc fans with bare wires. Do I need to wire them into some sort of transformer or can they be wired directly into a wall plug?

Computer fans are DC not AC so you will need something like an old 12v DC phone or appliance power supply, wall wart is what many call them.

Something like 500mA at 9-12v DC usually does the trick and I found one that is adjustable between 3v and 12v so I can vary the fan speed by turning the knob.

You would cut the plug off the DC end and wire the red and black wires from the fans to the two leads of the cut off cord. Some fans have polarity so the wires need to be correct, if the fan does not run reverse the two wires and it should. Other fans run one direction when wired one way and the opposite direction when the wires are reversed. I try to have all my fans blowing cooler drye rair into the aquarium, sump or canopy and let the hotter moiste air rise out the top. When you suck air out the fans gum up since the air is damp and starts to coat the fans with dust and grime until they quit.

Would an Apex breakout box work?
