Should I get a BTA?

Alright so my tank has been set up since may, about 20 gallons. The nano cube currently holds a small occ clown, purple firefish and tailspot blenny. My tank is pretty clean usually and i only feed once every 3 days. My tank uses activated carbon, protein skimmer, mangrove pods and those tiny chalk rings with holes for the bacteria. My lights are the 60w Maxspect Razor and my temp stays between 24-26C.

So the question is whether I should get a BTA? The reason I want one is for both my clown and that my lfs is renovating so they are trying to sell everything. The small BTAs are 3 bucks each.

I think my tank can handle but I just want some extra input

$3.00 !!!??????

Are you serious? I've never heard of a deal like that.

BTW, sounds like you might be fine with a BTA. How is your flow? They like a lot, but random.

I have one small nano pump (not quite sure how much it pumps out but it takes in 3.8W) and another larger pump with a revolving attachment. I guess that doesn't really help but my flow is like med/high.

Yeah, it's a pretty crazy deal; a buddy of mine bought one today, hopefully they will still have one when I go tomorrow ;)

IDK, flow sounds kinda low.

For that price, you should buy them all and send them to me. Where are you located?

I would be buying them blindly, then selling some for a fair price. But I got one in a 10 gal (soon to be 20) and have had no issues.

I've got two BTA in my 23g with no protein skimmer and they are doing great, they love their flow. Also don't forget to cover up your power heads etc, my second one got sucked into my filter strainer the day after I got it when he was trying to find a spot. They grow fast though, part of the reason I'm upgrading :)

Alright so I managed to pick up a BTA at the store, turns out it was $5 not $3 (not sure how my friend got it for $3, but he probably got extra a discount). Also picked up 2 sexy anemone shrimp $2.5 ea and a blue discusoma for $5. il take a pic of the BTA later ;).

Thanks for your help guys!

EDIT: the BTA is 6cm or roughly 2.4inches

Congrats on the great deal, watching my two clowns nuzzle into my BTA is the coolest thing to watch in my tank right now. My tank was new-ish when I got mine but found a deal too good to pass up as well. Being new in the hobby, its good to be prepared on some of their behavior. It may crawl into a hole and hide for 3 days. It may move all over your tank in the first 12 hours (might want to move any delicate corals that aren't firmly attached to the sandbed temporarily). It might plant itself in a spot you don't like, changing flow might encourage another move. They can also shrink to a squat flat pancake and retract tentacles almost entirely. They do that under stress but also occasionally to expel waist. I mistook my first one for dead in that condition but a really dead one appears more to melt and will really stink.

Best of luck!

Do I need to anemone proof my powerhead?

I've seen that advice before, it probably is a good idea (although not entirely sure how you do that). Depending on where the power head is in the tank would vary how concerned about that I'd be.

Just keep in mind that the nem will move where it wants. Don't try to put it where you want or you'll stress it out too much. It'll find a spot and stay there if the lighting/flow is good.

It went into the grate to my sump and half of it was trapped there. I had to stop the pumps for a few hours. Still on the grate but most of it came out. :(

When adding anemones you should always watch em for the first few hours. I always put mine on the floor of the tank and let them move until I know they'll stay

I build little nests for mine out of rock rubble. They like to be surrounded on all sides and they like to have a hole to tuck into sometimes. If you have the nest in place with suitable flow and lighting, there is a chance it will stay put. No guarantees though.

I agree with Panda, they will move around until they find a happy place.

It seems like it found a new home right next to my acans. The BTA has a tentacle touching the acan. not sure If i should move the Acan or not.

I put some foam over my powerhead and my filter intake. The filter intake foam reduced the water flow rate in the sump and caused the water to overflow inside. Not a huge problem tho, the skimmer just overflowed a bit while I napped. I thought it was kinda funny in a strange way ;).

Do you think a powerhead cover like this: will work?

i hope we see a foto soon!

not sure about powerhead, i only have flower nems,

Haha almost forgot about that wzZ12Rs.jpg
