AquaClear 20 versus Eheim Skim 350

I've had an AC20 for a good while primarily to polish with Chemi-Pure Elite, and secondly for mechanical filtration. I just bought an Eheim Skim 350 for USD$30 at my LFS because it was a very good price and because I mindlessly did not think to check whether it was a protein or a surface skimmer. Were it a protein skimmer I'd use it in conjunction with the AC20, no question to ask. But, it turns out to be a surface skimmer. Since it has a smaller foot print than the AC20, I'm considering using it in place of the AC20. If I do use the 350 in place of the AC20, I'd take out the sponge and just put a bag of Chemi-Pure in it.

 

Any thoughts on that?
