billybatz9
Whats the best sand for a biocube? Going to have a jawfish and other fish that like sand like a goby Link to comment
Ruckus16
I used to have a jawfish in my 75. I wouldn't put one in a biocube. They need a very deep sand bed. 5"-7", deeper if you can. Link to comment
billybatz9
What about for a goby? What kind of sand. Link to comment
Neebles
I like Caribsea seaflor special grade. It's a mix of different sized grains. My Jawfish is happy Link to comment

frags
You can order some sand from Marco rocks..that's what I'm using. Link to comment

CatfishSoupFTW
fiji pink is a name i hear a lot. been meaning to try it out. most likely will in my new build. Link to comment
Tamberav
Caribsea, reef flakes, anything that is a larger grain (no sugar size) will work. They also like rock rubble, they use it to line their burrow to help keep it from collapsing. Link to comment
frags
Coarse or fine? And how hard was it to clean? I would go with the coarse....I just rinsed mine in some Rodi water, it worked great. Link to comment
cju84
Get some live aragonite (which is more coarse) from your LFS. Link to comment
itzju
You can order some sand from Marco rocks..that's what I'm using. i also used the coarse sand for reef cleaners and so far it's great. definitely clean it before using or your tank will definitely be cloudy for a couple of days lol Link to comment

StrainedSky
I like using Tropic Eden reef flakes, you can get it from Premium Aquatics. Link to comment
IThas2Bme
+1 for the CaribSea Special Grade. Put 30 lbs into my 28g nano so I could add a BSJ when my tank is fully established. Really like the substrate but it needs thoroughly washed. The first 15 lbs I washed by the cupful and water was clear in 2 hours. The 2nd bag I got lazy and washed in a few buckets and it was cloudy for a week. Started with the tiger goby who is a very cool tunnel digger. He would however cover any frags on the bottom with sand as he'd dig a new burrow every night. Also be prepared he (and i imagine BSJs) may make a burrow somewhere off the back of your tank and there is a chance you might not see him for a few days. In a small tank with limited occupants because of the bioload, its a "con" to consider. Link to comment
billybatz9
Thanks for the reply guys.. After further research, I have come up with two final choices... Edens ReefFlakes or CaribSea Dry Aragonite Special Grade Reef Sand Which would you choose? ReefFlakes seems more expensive but it just seems soo much whiter, nicer, and cleaner. But I have also heard of good reviews for both. Kind of stuck Link to comment
tibbsy07
What are you willing to spend? It all serves the same purpose and will pretty much do the exact same thing to the exact same degree. It's all preference at this point. The sand isn't going to stay that white forever anyways. Link to comment

IThas2Bme
Your lights will change what the substrate looks like too. The Caribsea looks pretty light under the stock JBJ intermediate LEDs. Any lighter and I'd want to be vac-ing the gravel every other day. Link to comment
jgaepi
I like using Tropic Eden reef flakes, you can get it from Premium Aquatics. I used AragAlive for my first tank. Tons of good reviews about the reef flakes. But there are a few oddball posts out there from people saying they have a constant battle with algae blooms from reef flakes but not from other substrates in other tanks. Also I can't find the mm for the reef flakes? Is it a 1-2mm portion as well? Link to comment

I think reef-flakes was a bit larger grain and mostly uniform size and caribsea varied in size. Both are white under reef lights. Carib Sea was what was specifically with my jawfish and pistol/goby pair but either are appropriate grain. Link to comment
CronicReefer
I used the CaribSea dry aragonite and it is very white once it has been washed thorougly. It has a good sand grain size for most bottom dwellers. Link to comment

I've never had a bloom or anyone else I personally know that uses them. Link to comment
