ManGups
I have a 24 Gallon Fluval AIO for almost 2 months. Parameters are below(see signature - reading are from Sunday) My parameters are pretty stable. I diligently change 5 gallon on water a week and test for phosphates and nitrates. NO3 is pretty much zero since I changed water after cycling. PO4 varies from 0.01 to 0.04 ppm. If I discover phosphates at 0.04 I will do a 2nd water change in the same week (i.e 2 water changes a week - but this is rare since I almost never reach 0.04 ppm of phosphate) Question: For the last 2~3 days I have red strands of algae on the sand and rock. What is it? It is Red Slime/Cyano bacteria or something else? How do I get rid of it? I am diligent on my schedule and never skip a water change so what am I doing wrong to get an algae outbreak? See Video of algae: Other Info: Water: RO/DI at 0 TDS mixed with reef crystals at 1.026 Equipment: - Light - Radion Gen 2 (see pic for light schedule, currently at 50% for 10 hrs a day) : - Powerhead - 2 Vortech Mp10WS (both at 50% reef crest/ pulse/nutrient export mode over a day) - Skimmer - Tunze 9001 Coraline - Reactor - Innovative Marine Minimax All-In-One Desktop Media - (GFO and Activated carbon) - Chaeto in 2nd chamber with refugium light 20 hrs a day -Phosogaurd : maybe like 4 tablespoons in a Media bag Aquaria: 4 Fish McCosker's Flasher Wrasse Paracheilinus mccoskeri Cherub Dwarf Angel Saddleback Clownfish Amphiprion polymnus Yellow Wrasse Halichoeres chrysus 12 Corals Acropora Coral Acropora sp Bam Bam Zoas Cyphastrea Cyphastrea japonica Florida Ricordea Mushroom Ricordea florida God of War (Zoanthid) Hammer / Anchor Coral, Branching Euphyllia parancora Leaf Plate Montipora, Green Montipora capricornis Leaf Plate Montipora, Orange Montipora capricornis Leptoseris, Pin Stripe Mint Green Leptoseris Lordhowensis Coral Acanthastrea lordhowensis Red Eyes Cyphastrea Cyphastrea sp. What helped me is I used chemiclean and got better flow in my tank. Check for dead spots. The chemiclean worked like magic but has to be used carefully. It's not gonna fix any problems, it will cover it up well. And what could be is your tank just leveling out. Whenever I go to my fish store who has a marine biologist on staff, they ask how old my tank is and I say 3 months. They'll say "wow only 3 months..." It's a common thing to go through these algae stages from what I've read. Red/blue legged hermit crabs love the stuff to by the way. Link to comment
