Biocube29 Lighting - What Next?

I have lost touch with my biocube.. it has become overwhelmed with algae.... after reflecting on what had happened to my interest in the aquarium, I believe one specific reason I began neglecting the tank was due to the constant annoyance of the biocube hood. The fans inside the hood have become increasingly loud and obnoxious, and they frequently burn out and I have to replace them. I also upgraded the lighting to ecoxotic panorama pro's, but now I'm looking for something else.....

My question is.. is there lighting that I can use that will do away with the biocube hood? and if so, what might those be? .... Also, is it even worth keeping the biocube if I get rid of the hood, or does it not look as good without the hood and should I be seeking out another tank entirely?

Thanks for any insights.

When I had my Aquapod 24g I went topless and ran a 150w halide which was the next logical step. Now a days, you would probably upgrade to LEDs.

However at this point you would want to decide if a new tank would be better suited for you. If you want a larger tank with not too much space a 40b and a sump would be a nice upgrade (look for Petco dollar tanks).

I just removed my hood, derimmed the glass, and took the back chambers out. Hanging a Kessil 150 Ocean Blue over the tank and drilling for a sump! Awesome project!

I also had the Ecoxotics - they were ok... I was never impressed. Better then the stock lighting, but I wasn't happy with the coverage due to mounting them in the hood.

I started with a Bio 8 and when the ballasts burned out due to a large water spill I purchased a cheap LED light to hang over it until I could get a new tank . It worked great with the hood open but some fish would jump out so I went back to the closed hood. Are you doing fish or corals?

Retro fit with my LEDs. Replaces the noisy fans and all. Kit if 90% complete. Drop me a line.

This is what I did and I couldn't be happier.

For me, going topless is not an option as I have fish that would postively jump out. Plus the fact the wife doesn't want anything hanging from the ceiling, made going with a retro a no-brainer.......
