JBJ 28 NANO Stock LED's not good - need retrofit suggestions

Been running the 25x1W 14K stock LEDS that came with this tank (it was a gift). It's been 10mths now and although I've moved things close to the top, this is just not enough light for a reef tank.

I'm going to give up on this tank for now, and move everything over to my DT.

Looking to upgrade the lights and need some help. I don't need super high tech here, just something that will run most basic corals - zoas, froghspawn, mushrooms, torch, things like that. Also needs to be quite as this tank sits in my office.

I started to look at adding some LED strips, but quickly got over $150 for some basic upgrades. The full upgrade kits are not that much more - so thinking of going down that route.

I see a few different retrofit kits out there - steves leds and rapid led. Right now I am leaning towards the Steve 99% kit. That's my max budget (~300) so I am open to any other suggestions that stay within my budget.

Anyone have other kits I should look at?

You guys are not the only ones to say Steve's Kit (and their customer service) is difficult.

I'm looking into Dave's retro - but they are the most expensiver. The folks at rapid had a good idea worth considering. Instead of a full retro kit, just add extra LEDS. There is room in the stock heatsink. If not I like the look of the "Aurora Puck" that Rapid has. 4 channel full spectrum.

zooman - your idea may be the best - ditch the hood and hang a kessell off a goosneck.

ok - researching... thanks for the help

Mine maybe a little more but comes with Storm controller, full spectrum with lime and 90% finished. Just mount and plug!

Yeah, but it comes with a controller which would well worth it!

Yes, after doing my research DAve's kit from nanoboxreef seems the most compelling for a retro kit.

Now however, I think I'm going to ditch the hood altogether. I can use it to light my fugde for my main DT, grow weed or something. After taking the hood off, find I really like the open look and just hate the fan noise. Even with super stealthy fans, this tank is in my office and it needs to be next to silent.

Going to go down another route. Perhaps a nanobox tide (Dave I shot you an email) or kessil off a gooseneck- I don't know. Going to look around. Perhaps see what sales come up on blackfriday

thanks for the ideas guys.
