Using filter floss to get sandstorm to clear up?

I'm setting up a new tank, and read about suggestions to use filter floss to clear up the water after adding sand. The sand also came with a packet of clarifying liquid.

So I did that, and miraculously it cleared up in about 2 hours!

It started like this:

I went out and came back a couple hours later to find this:

Now the problem. I was an idiot and took out the filter floss while the return pump (this is an AIO) was running. All the silt and dust it gathered up was released back into the tank, so I'm placed the floss back in and am letting it run it's course again.

Anyone know how to safely remove the floss without the releasing the silt? My plan is to turn off the return pump, then remove the floss so that it isn't pumped back into display. THen I'd have to siphon out the cloudy water in the back chambers.

Most people just let the tank clear itself, I have never even heard of filter floss lol, you could put a cup underneath it and pull it out in the cup

I would let it clear by itself, but after seeing that happen in 2 hours I got impatient lol.

Really never heard of it?

I have an HOB filter running for this with floss in it too, so my new plan is to turn the return pumps off when it's done, then stick the HOB filter in the back to clear up each chamber.

I have only run bb so no need to look around for it. Take the floss out the back chamber and just put the floss in the hob and remove the hob when done.

LOL he's never heard of filter floss, but I did take his suggestion to just put it in the HOB filters. Now I have 2 of them running with floss, and no floss in the tank/back chambers itself.

Keep the filter floss in the intake. It will keep those rear chambers clean and prevent nitrates. Change and replace it often.

Nothing personal but if you haven't heard of filter floss there isn't much advice you could give for it.

Put it back. You're going to pollute the hell out of that rear chamber. He's never heard of filter floss, advice should be taken with a grain of salt.

Yes, it's going back for sure. This is just for clearing up the water in the short term.

So you suggest putting floss in the overflow chamber right? How much, all the way to the top? Or use one of your media baskets? ;)

Yes in the overflow. This way you catch that sand cloud and in the future all detritus before it can accumulate and settle in the rear chambers. The HOB was a good idea to clean it up initially.

I would never stop running filter floss.

You just need a layer on the top right under the intake. 1-2" thick all the way across. A media basket would help accomplish this. The tank looks like something we don't make something specific for, I don't recognize the brand. You can see if something we do make fits that chamber, all dims are listed on the product pages.

Or make something on your own.
