jabeuy
Any ideas on how to attach conduit pipes to an aluminum extrusion stand? Unfortunately I don't think it'll be as easy has clamping a bracket to a wood stand as seen here: http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/350540-how-to-build-a-light-bar-perfect-for-wire-hanging-nano-box-units/ The light is about 10lbs. Any ideas? The stand: Link to comment
NorthGaHillbilly
Im looking forward to seeing what people say, my light is ~7 pounds, but im looking to do a conduit arm. I went and messed around with conduit at HD and felt that if I went with 3/4" for the arm i'd be fine, but im holding off till I hear what others think Link to comment

Yeah jabeuy, it looks like your tank is in front of a window, not sure if thats temporary or permanent so you couldn't follow jedi's exact method, but you could run another bar behind each of the back legs of your current tank stand, so it extends above your tank and then do something like what jedi did and attach that to the two free standing bars you just ran from the back and boom, hang or attach your light to that. jabeuy
Just use more 8020. Looks like that'll be the plan. Do you know if the different makers/brands are compatible? I can get the same brand (rexroth) from the guy I got the stand from, but it'll take another few weeks to get to me. But there's an 8020 distributor I can get parts from much quicker. 80 20 is a great thing isn't it? jabeuy
Just contacted the local supplier, and they say the 2 particular brands I want to mix are mostly compatible. But I have a new idea. Use the 8020 connectors to connect a 2x4 onto the frame. Then I can use the conduit hangers. Using conduit would be cool, cause then I can swivel the light away when I need to work in the tank. jedimasterben
With 8020 you could just slide it back, also Link to comment

Mr. Microscope
Just use more 8020.My first thought too. Should be able to hook it right up to the stand. Link to comment
jabeuy
So I've completely loafted on getting this done lol. Just been using the lights mounting arms for the past 2 months. I've decided to use 8020 if I end up hanging the light. The hanging kit that comes with my lights just has a loop at the end to hang. Anyone know how I can attach the hanging kit to an 8020 bar? jabeuy
If anyone out there comes across this, you can google '8020 tool hanger' as an option. Think I'll go with this, as one hanger is supposed to hold 100lbs,and you can slide across the 8020 t-slots. Link to comment

Would you mind posting the parts needed to do that exact setup or some kind of quick guide by chance? Never seen that done and I would love to do the same thing. Link to comment
bdevillier19
Without a doubt go for the 8020. If you did the electrical conduit you'd be looking at a major deduction in style points. It'd be a shame to take away from that sexy stand with sub-par (relatively speaking) light mount. Link to comment

You'd need parts like these to attach them to the existing stand frame: http://store.cpiautomation.com/mechanical/joining-plates/2-hole-inside-gusset-corner-bracket/ http://store.cpiautomation.com/mechanical/joining-plates/4-hole-inside-gusset-corner-bracket-long-style/ Link to comment

jabeuy
Thanks. I'd like to attach to the wall though. Find a distributor near you, they'll probably get you what you need. I got in touch with someone from that cpi place and showed them a picture, and they got back to me with a technical mock up and a parts list Link to comment
jedimasterben
All I did for mine was drill a small hole through it and run a screw into the studs in the wall. Link to comment
