Maxspect Razor nano?

Hi all,

So my mouse button has been hovering over the "Buy" button for a nanbox duo for the last few days, but the cost is holding me back. I've been looking into other LED options (for a Nuvo 16 gallon, mainly LPS and softies) and have come across Reefbreeders (superlux, don't have any option to hang a fixture unfortunately) or the Maxspect Razor Nano.

I know this topic has been beat to death on this forum and I've been trying to research, and here are my thoughts...

I've heard great things about the Reefbreeders lights, but unfortunately the form factor is killing me. The mounting device just looks like it'll be clunky over a Nuvo and I worry about accessibility into the tank w/ a mesh screen top on.

The Maxspect Razor Nano looks like a nice middle ground option (price wise it's a bit more than the Reefbreeders, but not terribly more) and it's got a nice sleek design. I've been trying to research the pros and cons of this fixture, but so far the most I've seen are some vague comments about mixed reviews and issues w/ this light (but nothing concrete) and that it's a bit purple.

What are your guy's thoughts? Maxspect razor nano? ReefBreeders for a solid light, but lose the form factor? Or should I just commit to the price tag of the Nanobox and go for it? Thanks in advance for your thoughts guys.

I started with a Maxspect razor nano and have since upgraded to a Nanobox. I don't have any experience with the ReefBreeders light.

The Maxspect is sleek and quiet (no fans). I appreciated a lot of disco ball effect from it though which was mitigated by changing the lens on it. Overall the color rendering was OK. You have some limited capability of changing the light over the course of the day with 6 timepoints.

The Nanobox is also sleek and infinitely customizable in terms of color scheme. A bit noisier because it does have a fan, but not bad. The light spectrum is just amazeballs. Somehow it made my tank look cleaner. I can't really explain it. Corals really pop under this light. I lost the green coloration of my Palythoa grandis under the Maxspect, but it has come back with the Nanobox. Superb blending of the light as well with no discoballing. Tons of control-ability with either the Storm or the BlueFish.

You get what you pay for. The Maxspect is a decent light for its price point. The Nanobox is at a slightly higher price point, but I'd say the quality is leaps and bounds better. Your LED light is going to be a purchase that can potentially last the life of the tank. It is one of those items IMO that is worth it to go big on, rather than regret it down the road and lose money by upgrading later.

(I still have my old Maxspect razor nano for sale if you want to go that route and buy a used one for cheap ;) )

Yeah, I keep on having the pro/con battle in my mind...

"But it's so expensive...for a light!" vs. "But it'll last for years and you'll likely never want to upgrade! Plus storm effects!"

The Maxspect seemed like a good compromise, regarding form factor, decent spectrum (has to better than the stock nuvo lights) and cost, was just concerned about how likely I'll be wanting an upgrade...

P.S Sent a PM regarding your Maxspect :)

I am here :) I little sick but here.

The Mini will handle the Nuvo 16 if you are running LPS,softies and/or SPS right under the light.

Duo will cover more than enough and allow for anything to grow anywhere!

Custom colors are free ( most ) however I do have a build time of four weeks. I

Dave, your making it hard to resist! Those are some pretty lights and above all, have yet to see one negative review. Likely going to pull the trigger on the duo soon, keep an eye out for my order! :)

P.s can the duo be mounted w a gooseneck?

i was having this same debate with myself for the past week. i ended up going with the razor, just for the fact that the mini tide didn't come stock with the controller. and as much as i would love the duo, it's overkill for my tank at the moment (i don't mind overkill but there's still other things i need to buy for my tank). give it time though, the itch will get me again eventually and i'll probably be getting a duo built.

You mean the upgrade itch? LOL.

Looking at the Nanobox site one is hard pressed to find an image of the underbelly of Dave's lights. I would like to see images of the most important side of the light. The wheels look cool but I want to see the engine.

Not as sexy pictures of Dave's lights, but some more of the guts to give you an idea...

Here is my (literally) BNIB Duo:

Here is a close-up of one of its boards:

And on a side-topic for anyone interested. I've sold my Maxspect Razor to Genie.
