3/4 inch plywood or 2x3 frame? Biocube stand

Hey guys,

I want to make a biocube stand, but I want to make it with the least amount of money put into it.

I wish I could do it less than $60. What is your opinion on the wood that I should use to make it?

A 4' x8' x3/4" sheet of "nice" plywood at Home Depot runs like $42...it would be plenty strong and you wouldn't have to build a skeleton and then skin it with plywood, just build a cube with it and that suckers not going anywhere. You'd be looking at under $60 for the wood and screws

My biocube 29 is supported by 2x4s with a 3/4" sheet of plywood on top. It's not the prettiest thing to look at but it's strong enough to hold up my car. As for bonding it's screwed together but if I did it over it would be glued and screwed just like my 40B stand.

Use Titebond III glue instead of screws. Stand will be considerably stronger with 3/4" ply.

Yep,

This is what I would do. My Biocube 14 sits on a stock Oceanic Biocube stand; which is junk.

I plan to build my own stand with 3/4" ply joined with biscuits and Titebond.

I bought Baltic ply for cleaner edges but it also is stronger.

If you have tools and skill, plywood is the best option. Stronger, looks nice. Gives you more room in the intererior. I don't know if nanoreef likes linking other sites, but if you google "projectaquarium diy ada stand" there is a really commonly used build guide in the planted freshwater community.

If you have no skill, and no tools, I made this stand here last month with 2x4s and a quarter inch plywood skin using $25 of wood, $70 of paint (primer, white for inside, flat black for outside, polyurethane to cover everything) and wood filler and sand paper and screws. I borrowed clamps, a cordless drill and a file. I had to buy big containers of most things, and I have enough supplies left that I could make a second stand for just $20 of wood. I used the guide found by googling "reefcentral diy stand template and calculator", the one by Rocketengineer that has been floating around for almost a decade.

Anyways, heres a link to the stand I just built. The poly turned the white paint yellow, but the black looks good. I still have to finish attaching the door, it sits on with magnets. For $100 and a couple weekends it turned out pretty good for somebody with no experience.
