inovative marine 16 gallon nuvo... failure

Hi. I regret putting this up but I have had the above tank for about 2 months. I was sitting in the recroom this afternoon and the front corner of the tank split along the curved glass. I saved all the coral and fish. But took a great loss in value when I returned them to the pet store. I did no mods to the tank at all..please be ware if you have this on your wish list. I am thankful we were home at the time to clean up the mess.

Did you by any chance call the manufacturer and ask if the serial number you have is version 1 or 2? I am asking because the majority of the losses appear to be the former, which had 5mm glass vs. the latter with 6 mm glass.

Not trying to minimize...as I ALSO have one still in the box ready to be set up in my new house. You can guarantee that I will be asking that question, and if they will swap out for the Nuvo 20....basically the same footprint without the curved glass.

Sorry this happened to you!

I had recommended the Nuvo 16 to a friend that wants to enter the hobby, but after seeing all the horror stories I told him to get the fusion 20g instead! Why take the chance?

IM should just do the right thing and recall all the 16g nuvos and replace them with fusion 20s for everyone. But nah...they just gonna wait for the 16g to break so you are forced to pay up for the fusion 20s.

Same thing happened to my Nuvo 24. The right front glass shattered while I was at work and I lost everything in my aquarium. It was the earlier model with the thinner glass. You can see by my signature what the aquarium looked like before the disaster. I now own the Fusion 30 which seems much better built and has thicker glass. It's been up and running for several months now with no incident. Please note that my Nuvo 24 was up and running a full year before the disaster so the verdict is still in the air with the Fusion. Have my fingers crossed.

Just an update... I contacted IM and they are being very helpful so no issues there. it looks like I will end up with the Fusion 20. It sucks starting from scratch as I had a bio cube for years and switched from that to the nuvo 16. I am a bit concerned the lights from the 16 will be bright enough for the 20.

Sorry to hear about this jambon- being a Nuvo 16 owner I am very concerned- that is awesome you were able to save your livestock- even if you took a loss turning them in. As evanski asked , do you know if it was gen 1 or 2. Also did you have a powerhead hanging or pointing in that direction? This is scary- seems every few weeks we see another one has cracked.

Ack! I wish IM would at the very least issue a statement regarding the actual numbers of failures (vs. successful tanks) and their thoughts regarding why it happens. That way at least current owners of the Nuvo 16/24 can better assess what risk their own tank poses (if possible), as opposed to all of us sitting around in a constant state of worry. I hate that I just can't sit back and enjoy my tank w/o that nagging worry that it's gonna bust on me. :(

First pic was my Nuvo 16-gallon on Wednesday, 10/29/14; second pic as of Friday, 10/31/14. My story is pretty much like the numerous others I've read since my tank structurally failed. If you google 'Nuvo 16 gallon tank failure', you will find a substantial litany of virtually identical stories spread across several forums like this one, all manifesting a sudden top-to-bottom crack circling down around either the right or left front curve, leading to a catastrophic loss. The only real differentiating factor is whether the owner was home when the failure occurred, allowing for at least the possibility of salvaging some (hopefully all) of your precious tank inhabitants, and possibly mitigating some property damage, or, not at home at the time of failure, encountering a complete disaster upon arrival. I am astounded that this model is still for sale in the marketplace, given this preponderance of consistent anecdotal evidence that there is a major problem with the product. A recall is definitely in order (be it 5mm, 6mm, or both; be honest about what's occurring with far too much frequency, respect the value of your customers' time and money, and do the right thing, IM). I don't even want to think about the aggregate monetary cost of losing the tank/related accessories, livestock lost and the subsequent property damage caused to floors, walls, carpets, etc. We all know that this is one of the more expensive hobbies in the known universe to begin with; IM's apparent willful refusal to acknowledge, let alone correct, this problem is insult on top of injury. I would advise anyone who asked me to think long and hard before buying this tank, and when you're done thinking about it, run (don't walk) in the opposite direction from these curved-edge models. It's a shame, because they really are quite visually/ergonomically beautiful, but, in my opinion, that beauty comes with too high a risk. BTW, I was one of the more fortunate ones insofar as I was home at the time of the failure, and was running fairly light on livestock, and was able to salvage pretty much everything, and pretty quickly mop up whatever water didn't go into my available buckets. My LFS has been great throughout this, and they're 'housing' everything for me until a new tank is up and running. I'm still relatively new to the hobby, and this was my first tank, which I've had all of 5 months. Ironically, managing through this situation has actually given me a boost of confidence; hair algae and fluctuating pH now suddenly seem like a piece of cake...

Unfortunately, Maui, IM appears only to have added the fusion tanks to their line, not substituted them for the curved-front 16 and 24 gallon tanks, which are still being made and very actively marketed by IM (a visit to their website will confirm this). I think is unconscionable for them to do this given the known, unacceptable rate of catastrophic failure for these tanks. What will it take to get IM to acknowledge the issue and stop selling these time-bombs; people are making a serious investment here in time and money, and simply deserve better from this manufacturer. Actually, I was a bit astonished when I added everything up and calculated that I had spent well over $3000 all-in, in the course of just under 5 months, for just a 16-gallon tank (I don't even want to think about what some of the longer-term numbers for hobbyists with larger set-ups must be-yikes!). In any event, I'm getting swapped out for a Fusion 20 (like others who have posted here). Looks great, and it's nice to have a larger tank with virtually the same footprint (I'm working with a fairly tight space allotment for the tank), but I have to admit that given what I experienced, I'm a little on edge with a fairly new model like this, but I think that will subside as I have somewhat more faith in the more traditional four-square design. Time will tell.

I have been silent but no more. I got my Nuvo 16 over 6 months ago. For reference I should add that I have been successfully keeping marine animals since 1973. (I once built my own wet dry from scratch and it looked and worked great!-wish I had kept it.) But back to the Nuvo...I have never in my history had such a bad time trying to get a set up going; I lost two corals in as many months. I have done a lot of research on line and in person and determined that the stock lights are a big problem with that set up. Maybe the rest of you know this already but essentially they are only good for softies. IM didnt do there homework in a lot of ways. Sure, they look good but they are pretty much useless. I am going with hi power LEDs to solve the lighting problem. I am also switching out the faux rock for the real stuff while it is still available (side bar). Now, as I read this forum I learn that the whole tank could split. What next, exploding Pyrex (thank you China). Thanks for nothing IM.
