How to promote growth of Coralline algae ...

I have a tank which I started around 1 1/2 months. Tank is doing well. (see parameters below in signature)

I started with Dry Pukani Rock and my cycle was started with Dr. Tim's One and Only Nitrifying bacteria (I did not use any mature tank seeding for cycle)

Question: How do I get Carolline Algae start growing? I have read suggesting seeding with a rock with carolline algae to get it started. Other suggestions include keeping Alk and Ca balanced and trying to boost Mg Level.

Additionally, will 'CaribSea Purple Up' help in getting in started or will it help boost if present? Has anyone used this and what was their experience? Please advice..

The setup us as below:

- Light - Radion Gen 2 (RMS mounted 8.5 inches above water at 40% n radiant reef mode for total time 12 hrs including ram up and down)

- Return - Stock Fluval supplied with M90

- Ecotech Reeflink

- Powerhead - 2 Vortech Mp10WS

- ATO - Tunze 3155

- Skimmer - Tunze 9001 Coraline

- Reactor - Innovative Marine Minimax All-In-One Desktop Media (GFO and Activated carbon)

- In tank media basket with Chaeto

- Heater - 100W Neo Therm Heater

- JBL Nano Glow Fuge light

Aquaria:

Yehp, time and proper levels. It's a little hard to believe that you don't have any traces of it, and from what I can see the Vortechs already have some, right?. Purple Up will just provide nutrients and trace elements necessary for growth.

Scrape any coralline you have and let it spread thru the tank. I remember when I first got in the hobby I bought a small piece of live rock and scraped it into the tank. This really helped seed the tank.

My 50 gallon tank took 4 months before it showed any signs of coraline and even now its just in a few spots. My 30 gallon was covered in only a couple of months. Of course it was stable and didn't "crash" twice like my 50 did. I have also noticed that LEDs seemed to encourage growth of coraline in my tanks FWIW.

I have a green ting on the entire rock.. not sure if it is caroline algae. The one you see on the vortech is from the previous tank.It is no longer alive since the vortech out out of water for 3 months.

Some coralline is green, yes. Anyway, once you start adding frag plugs into the tank it'll probably be impossible to not introduce coralline. Have you already? I don't even know. Just scrape away when you see it, and twiddle your thumbs. Eventually you'll have too much of it and you'll be taking a scraper to your glass way too often. :]

I have almost 10 corals (SPS, LPS, softies) added over a period. My last tank saw quite a bit of purple (was seeded with LFS rock) but this one I see no tinge of purple so was wondering if there was anything to promote. I guess I will just have to wait it out.

Does the scraping off of current coraline to seed the tank work well? That never crossed my mind as I thought it may damage existing coraline. Might have to give it a try!

Yehp, this is pretty good at spreading the coralline around the tank. Coralline's basically a bunch of teeny bits growing together, so you're not technically damaging the cells themselves when you scrape it. The small pieces float off and settle elsewhere in the tank, then start encrusting there. So if you've got coralline somewhere you don't need it, like the back wall or the glass, scraping it off is a great plan.
