snail dying out?

basically i had some snails in my 30 gallon that were pretty big and i shut that tank down temporarily i have a 10gallon nano that i keep pretty clean (2.5gallon water changes every week) and only have a clown and a goby in there with some hermits and snails. anyway the big snails seem to be staying in one spot and today one is turned over and i can tell it just rotting away .. what gives? is it just to clean that there isnt enough nutrients for the big guys? if not what should i test for that would be killing the snails? my fish and everything else seems fine

thank you!

edit* so i checked the nitrate parameters since i read those can be deadly to snails and voila it is alot higher then it should be im thinking the AC70 i have going was trapping a bunch of shit that build up the nitrate so i replaced the filter floss cleaned it out did a water change i have some chemi pure elite behind there aswell brand new . Any suggestion to lower nitrates other then water changes? any recommended filter bag?

If you don't have enough algae for the snails to eat they could die from starvation but nitrates are not likely the cause unless they are at some extreme level.

the nitrates are at like 20ppm so im just doing water changes to bring it down. its not a mature tank so not having enough algae for them to eat might be it too? so far only ones that seem to be affected are the two big ones and one smaller snail. i still have some in there that seem to be doing fine. Maybes thats it just not enough food ! ill keep on eye on everything i figured if it was because of the high nitrates all the snails would be reacting badly.

20ppm is not what I would consider toxic. Over 40ppm is when I would start worrying. Drop an algae wafer in the tank if you feel they need food.

It may have just been a change in parameters that shocked them. I'm not necessarily saying that either tank had parameters that were too high or too low, but different enough that it either caused them to go into a hibernating state or even killed them. Also, you have not mentioned exactly what type of snails were the ones having problems. Some snails are more sensitive than others. Also, some snails(most commonly Astraea) cannot flip themselves back over if they were to get inverted. Was the one that you found upside down and rotting an astraea? If so, that would explain why that one died.

yeah its definitely not over 40ppm , im just confused to why the nitrates are even that high? my only guess is i should clean the AC70 more often.

they are indeed Astraea snails and im aware they cannot flip each other over so i do it for them if they are upside down , should of been more specific they have been in that tank for a while months (2+) so its not like they died right after going from the 30 to the 10 so my only other thought would be starvation but i do see some green spots of algae on the rocks and even tiny bit on glass so im kinda of confused on this one.

Don't stress over it too much. Snails come and go without warning. If you are seeing algae then they have plenty to eat so I wouldn't worry about them starving.
