Squared
FTS as of 7/4/15: Original first post: Starting a new thread, because this finally feels like a new and fresh start from my 17.4g reef. Link is in sig in case you are interested in that, but it's nothing special. A few months ago I split up my 17.4g due to GHA. The coral and some rock went into a 12g nanocube (will start thread for that once it is presentable) and my rock and most the GHA went into this 29g. Now that I have like 0 GHA left, I decided to do something different with this tank instead of moving my coral back over. Also, my itty bitty sailfin blenny still needs a place to stay safe from my hawkfish. Not using much for equipment, just some koralias, and AC30, and a jager heater. Lighting is an aquatic life T5HO fixture with x2 geisemann aquablue+ bulbs. First FTS, 10-9-2014 Fish: Venustus angel Falco hawk Helfrichi firefish Blue chromis Macro algae (all from maria, aka got2envy, hope they grow fast!): Caulerpa proliferia Red grape Flame algae Blue scroll Also have some algae eating snails for CUC. More pics: Link to comment
otest82
I'm also doing something similar in a 45 gallon frag tank. Link to comment
Squared
The caulerpa isn't doing to well, can't figure how to place it in the tank. I think I'll just leave it be. Had to move bey turbo snail, apparently they eat red grape algea... Link to comment
Squared
About 4 months later, and almost nothing has happened. If anything I took a few steps back: Firefish was getting beat up by the hawk, so I had to move him. Lost all the c. prolifera and red grape. Blue scroll and halymenia are doing surprising well. Added a green sinularia, GSP frag, and a purple shroom. GHA and cyano have taken over, I need to do more water changes and maybe change up the lighting a bit. Removed quite a bit of liverock, it was just taking up too much space. Hopefully I can keep my interest in the hobby this time, and I can get some where with this tank. Link to comment
Squared
GHA still a persisting issue, but the algae I have has grown like mad. Looking forward to getting some new species of macro soon, and I still need to make a to for the tank so I can bring the water level back up. Maybe after finals. Ahhh so the pic turned out bad, but you can still see the growth. Not sure what to do with that PVC, I may dress it up with rocks and putty because my fish really like it. Link to comment
Squared
Tank is still in the middle of a re-scape, and I'm still deciding how I want to arrange my algae. The live rock has been getting quarantined for the past few weeks, and I just put one of the pieces back in and glue scroll onto it. Prolifera bed is growing in quite nicely...although I will need to remove some if I want to put more rocks in tank. Link to comment

You sell so much macro algae but it looks like you don't have that much lol do you have another tank? Link to comment
Squared
well, I had more, but I sold it i have another small tank with halmenia, portiera and h. pannosa but it's mostly a reef Link to comment
Squared
Better FTS, since the tank cleared up a little. Once I get my scape in order and finalize placement, I will take more time to take better pictures. But for now these are just progression shots. I have been considering re-homing my hawk so I could get some small shrimp and gobies, or maybe even a seahorse or pipefish. But I'm not sure, because I still think he's a cool fish. Link to comment
gena
Looks great squared! Everything looks really healthy . Link to comment
Squared
New FTS with the new scape! I made that cave out of a few pieces of dry rock putty'd and glued together, and made sure it was tall enough and spacious enough for the angel to sleep/hide in. Also rearranged the macros a bit. yoshii
Ooh I like that new arch piece! And that padina in the front looks awesome Are you planning on letting everything grow out or are you going to add more rock? Link to comment
1.0reef
That high yellow Venustus is awesome. Link to comment

And that padina in the front looks awesome Are you planning on letting everything grow out or are you going to add more rock? for now i'm letting it grow out...i know for sure i want a patch of caulerpa, and that takes up a bit of room. I have more rocks though. might be hard to fit, however. i've always liked keeping a spacious look to the rocks That high yellow Venustus is awesome. oh hey haven't seen you in while Link to comment
Squared
having trouble with cyano, so i've been trying to do waterchanges for off and i've done a few blackout days...don't want to do a week since i have algae. not sure what else to do, maybe cut down on lights... Link to comment

Try removing the sand that has it and replace it every few weeks? Link to comment
yoshii
Where is it growing? Sand? Rocks? Both? Link to comment

Squared
Try removing the sand that has it and replace it every few weeks? this is new sand, and i do remove it when i do water changes Where is it growing? Sand? Rocks? Both? mostly on the right side near the caulerpa, and on the cladophora :/ i fear that attempting to fight the cyano is going to have negative affects on the algae, but i could probably stand to feed less would it be dumb to add another 48w of T5s right now? i have the other fixture, but i know some of these macros do really well under high light, and with the new cover i made it seems like caulerpa are getting shaded a little.. also having trouble with the halymenia in my reef, for reason its dying back Link to comment
yoshii
Yoshi you are a macro tank God Haha thank you! Squared, I've found that adding more flow in the problem areas helps A TON. Probably because it kicks up any detritus and lets it get into the filter Also, if you see any spots in the tank that accumulate detritus, add flow there or change things so it doesn't because a dirt trap. I wouldn't add the extra light until you've got the cyano taken care of. How much are you feeding? Link to comment
Squared
too much. but the angel loves to eat haha threw in a couple more nass snails to help with clean up. i make sure that with my rock and pump positioning water gets around all the spots in the tank, its never been a problem unless the pumps get clogged. i'll try to cut back on feeding a bit, not sure what else i can do. and yeah i'll wait on the lights. yoshii
If feeding is the source of the problem, then adding the nass was a good move. I have some scarlet hermits in my macro tank, they don't eat any of my macros but love to eat leftover fish food Adding more macros would help too Link to comment
Squared
I definitely plan on getting more in the future, but right now I need to grow what I have. This weekend I plan on adding some rock in the center, so I can place the portiera up higher and in the middle of the water current.. Does not seem to be doing well in the back of the tank, and is accumulating GHA. Link to comment
yoshii
Yeah that's one thing about prolifera, if not in stronger flow it traps dirt (mostly when grown in the sand)A large water change also wouldn't hurt Link to comment
justinfox
Padina. I see a LOT of this around my local inter-tidal rock pools. The stuff gets really colourful too, super bright blues/purples and gold tinges. Have always wondered whether it would grow in an aquarium or not! Very cool. Link to comment
